Radical Fast Food Joint Doubles Down on High Wages~$15 per hour!/In Michigan..

Last edited Thu May 1, 2014, 08:07 PM - Edit history (1)

Business 09.09.13~Blast from the Past..

"So you thought $12 an hour for a burger place was revolutionary? Try $15. Daniel Gross talks to the owners of Detroit’s Moo Cluck Moo as they supersize starting wages."

In August, I spoke with the owners of Moo Cluck Moo, a Detroit-area burger and chicken fast-food joint that is aiming to do something revolutionary: pay far more than the minimum wage. In an industry that treats labor as a commodity, co-owners Brian Parker and Harry Moorhouse decided to turn the conventional wisdom on its head. They’d start workers at $12 an hour, and design their business so that it could run profitably at those wages. Rather than take advantage of the epic slack in the Detroit-area labor market, they’d aim to set a slightly higher standard

In exchange for paying higher wages, Moo Cluck Moo’s owners got better service, more skilled and committed employees, and a lot of free publicity. After our article, Moo Cluck Moo was featured on outlets like Huffington Post and MSNBC. Meanwhile, executives at other chains were crouched in a defensive pose as workers walked out over low wages.

"..Why $15? “We always wanted to be at $15 an hour,” said Parker. “It just feels human to do it.”

Much More ON.. MooCluckMoo

It Can Be Done!.. Meanwhile in the Present Day..

#1010Means: Raising The Minimum Wage

President Barack Obama speaks about minimum wage at the White House. Senate Republicans on Wednesday, blocked a bill to raise the federal minimum wage for the first time in five years

Yes, the Senate Republicans Block Minimum Wage Bil

"A proposal to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 died in the Senate on Wednesday, when Democrats failed to gather the 60 votes required to bring it to a clean vote. The only Republican to vote in favor of ending debate and holding a vote was Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., initially voted to move the bill forward, but switched his vote to “no” as part of a parliamentary maneuver which will allow him to bring the legislation back to the floor at a later date. Even if the proposed minimum wage hike cleared the Senate, there it was little chance it would ever receive a hearing in the Republican-controlled House. Yet recent polling shows growing popular support for raising the minimum wage, making Wednesday’s vote into a political win for the Democrats."

a story on PBS Newshour about minimum wage. They went to Seattle and talked to three progressive restaurant owners who all were against the higher minimum wage because they thought they'd have to charge customers more and people wouldn't go out to eat. But all of them paid their employees higher-than-national minimum wages already and they didn't mention any problems. I didn't understand, it was like chunks of information were left out to make it more negative. They asked some customers who were buying burgers at Dick's and all but one said that they'd have no problem paying more. It was strange. Thank you so much for this story!

It just proves what we on DU all know: The working poor are not poor out of economic necessity. Rather, they are victims of deliberate greediness.
