More than 100 sickened after food safety summit

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/more-100-sickened-food-safety-211355339.html

Health officials are investigating what may have sickened over 100 people who attended a conference where more than 1,300 food safety experts had gathered.

No one at the Food Safety Summit held April 8-10 in Baltimore was hospitalized, according to health officials, and most people reported cases of diarrhea.

Alvina K. Chu, who is leading the Maryland Department of Health's investigation, said Tuesday that officials haven't yet determined what caused people to get sick. It's not yet clear if the illness was transmitted by food or from person to person, she said.

The Baltimore City Health Department received complaints of nausea and diarrhea from four people one week after the conference. After the illnesses were reported, city health officials inspected the convention center after and its in-house catering company, Centerplate, on April 16, and issued a violation for condensation dripping from an ice machine, according to city health department spokesman Michael Swartzberg.

if the only thing the board of health found wrong was condensation on the ice machine. I'm not sure what you can do about that in a humid area like Baltimore besides wipe it down daily with bleach so mildew doesn't grow.

6. My girlfriend and I put on a comedy show a couple year ago for St. Patricks day.

We booked a local Eagles Lodge and served a corned beef and cabbage dinner. All went well but what I still can't believe is what her 27 year old daughter said to the crowd. We let her MC. She gets up and among her comments was explaining why we didn't have the downstairs area of our restaraunt open yet. "Problems with the health inspectors" she tells them! A crowd of like 300 people eating our food and she says that! The problem was that they were trying to force us to spend like 15 grand to put in some hi-tech sewage system to replace our septic system as if we were opening up a resort hotel. Better to have just left that alone!

After that success, the next show we planned, we couldn't even give tickets away. I wonder why? You can't underestimate what that kind of stupidity will do to you! As it turned out, our restaraunt/comedy club was probably doomed because of the upcoming economic crash. I will always believe that comment cost me a few thousand bucks though.

Our comedian that night was this guy, Huck Flynn. He was a real kick in the ass! Great guy! I hope he hits it big if he's still working.
