The recent destruction in the southern states sadly reveals the need for decent effective government. Many of these poor souls who lost everything will be looking for local, state and federal dollars to help them through their disaster. Only effective government help will get them on the road to rebuilding until the next storm hits.
Also lives were saved by government weather radio when all else was knocked out. And the private sector cannot itself fully recover without the partnership of government entities. These catastrophes are simply too great for individual communities to handle, when there is nothing left but rubble.
Small and limited government may be a good political "meme". It will come with a cost we cannot afford.

If only there was some way to monetize natural disasters, make it profitable to have tornadoes come ripping through towns. As it is, twisters and floods just seem to leave a bunch of chaos and debris behind, and a lot of people - the ones who seem most affected by these events - lose everything.
