Abe's wife joins Tokyo gay pride parade
Akie Abe, the wife of the prime minister, and writer Hirotada Ototake were among more than 3,000 people who marched through central Tokyo on April 27 to raise awareness and show support for Japan's sexual minorities.
The 20th anniversary of the pride parade was a highlight of Tokyo Rainbow Week 2014 that is running through May 6 to celebrate the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.
The parade wound through the Shibuya and Omotesando districts and other areas around Yoyogi Park, and featured rainbow flags, the symbol of the LGBT movement, and many signs and placards supporting sexual diversity, one of which read, There are LGBTs among your friends.
We can have sex changes thanks to our forerunners, said a 27-year-old female-to-male transsexual company employee who has applied to officially change his registered gender. There are still many people facing difficulties. I hope to help them.
