Shiree Bundy Cox, one of Cliven Bundys 14 children, took to her public Facebook page Thursday night to defend her father against charges of racism after he opined about the Negro being better off under slavery. Cox lashed out at media figures, including Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck, who have each distanced themselves from the Nevada rancher since his views on race came out.
Cox began by addressing her fathers racist comments:
Im sure most of you have heard the news about my dad being called a racist. Wow! The media loves to take things out of context dont they? First off Id just like to say that my dad has never been the most eloquent speaking person. Like someone said, hes a Moses who needs an Aaron to speak for him. This is true. Second, however, is that the media has turned this into a circus side show. Its like their trying to throw us off the real subject. Why was this ever even brought up? What does this have to do with land rights issues?
She then moved on to question Hannitys loyalty to her familys cause:
Sean Hannity was all for reporting the happenings at the Bundy Ranch until this popped up. I wonder if someone hoped it would be that way
By the way, I think Mr. Hannity is more worried about his ratings than he really is about what my dad said. If he supports a supposed racist, what will that do to his ratings? Hes already lost his #1 spot on Fox.

(116,464 posts)but I'll add it here:
Cliven Bundy doesn't think Fox News host Sean Hannity "abandoned" him in the wake of his racist, pro-slavery rant, but one of the Nevada rancher's daughters thinks otherwise.
Shiree Bundy Cox on Thursday took aim at conservatives who rallied and amplified her father's cause on national television only to abandon him after the media "turned this into a circus side show."
<...>
"Sean Hannity was all for reporting the happenings at the Bundy Ranch until this popped up. I wonder if someone hoped it would be that way .By the way, I think Mr. Hannity is more worried about his ratings than he really is about what my dad said. If he supports a supposed racist, what will that do to his ratings? He's already lost his #1 spot on Fox," she added.
<...>
Bundy Cox also took issue with conservative radio host Glenn Beck, who was critical of her father before his racist comments came to light this week:
Glenn Beck was never 100% on board with my dad, but now he has an excuse to distance himself even farther. Could there be people out there who want it that way? Get the un main stream media out of the way from reporting this situation in a positive light and the battle is more than won for the opposing side....Again I'd like to ask, "What does my dad's opinion on the state of the Blacks on welfare have to do with the land rights issue?" Nothing! It's a detouring tactic. It's taking away from the real issues and what has been accomplished. The mainstream media want this to happen to make people deviate from the real important things and focus on a comment that has absolutely no relevance. It's a tactic that has been used for decades. I hope people will see this for what it really is.
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/hannity-bundy-fox-news-daughter
"Land rights issue"? Your father is a deadbeat. First Bundy blames MLK for his racist comments, and now is daughter is trying to claim others are condemning him to deflect from his original debacle. No one forced this asshole to make a racist statement.
Let's be clear, this is a demented circus! These assholes came out from under their rock to make a scene, and they're being exposed for the delusional racists they are. Every statement is an attempt to pretend they're not all part of the same conservative movement that's destroying this country.

Steve Benen:
But some prominent GOP officials rolled the dice anyway. Fox News and Glenn Beck celebrated the rancher as a hero, while U.S. senators like Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Dean Heller (R-Nev.) cheered Bundy on, calling him a patriot, even as he declared an ability to ignore laws and court orders he doesnt like.
Its become increasingly difficult to maintain this posture. For one thing, anyone relying on the threat of violence to act above the law hasnt earned the backing of anyone in the American mainstream. For another, some of the basic elements of Bundys claims now appear to be false.
<...>
Frankly, it was pretty obvious before that federal lawmakers like Rand Paul and Dean Heller were making a huge mistake rallying behind Bundy. When it comes to choosing a proper cause celebre, its best not to choose a man whos said, I dont recognize [the] United States government as even existing, and whose supporters appeared prepared for a confrontation a potentially violent confrontation with American law enforcement.

I remember when Glenn Beck was 'released' from Fox News - there was an article pointing out how he was getting $30 million. I'll bet I know where that came from.
Trust me, he's just out there creating another site for right wingers to point to when a Fox News story needs backing. Herman Cain and Allen west too, just more web 'news sources' to VERIFY every right wing non-truth in existence.

(70,695 posts)Here's my e-mail to the local radio wingnuts who have been staying totally away from TehBUNDY:
Wingnut victimhood. Yesterday HANNITY was poormouthing about how poor wingnuts ALL get smeared with racism just every time that ONE wingnut says any little racist thing! And he had help from one of those Minority Rethugs, a Black wingnut. And BUNDY has a Black bodyguard who says he will take a bullet for him. It dont matter what racism BUNDY actually holds, says Darling Daughter, what matters is property rights and its THE MEDIA who have turned it all into a circus --- NOT the-BUNDY holding microphones in front of cameras and summoning armed goons making threats to use women as human shields, so plainly its THE MEDIA just HOPING things would TURN OUT THIS WAY! HAH!
Yeah, those media! I can testify that our LOCAL WINGNUT MEDIA are JUST as scurvy as the BigTimers, totally running away to keep the daily topics on "Lesbian polygamists" and always on ILLEGALS and ILLEGAL VOTERS!!!
So Ms Bundy-COX finds it cowardly of HANNITY to abandon a supposed racist while he was willing to support him while his true racism was politely veiled as is the standard wingnut m.o. Yeah, those RATINGS will make wingnuts ABANDON ALL THEIR PRINCIPLES!!!!!!!!!

(7,234 posts)No no no sweetie your dad said:
but hey lets just post the whole transcript in full context.
Weve progressed quite a bit from that day until now, and sure dont want to go back; we sure dont want the colored people to go back to that point; we sure dont want these Mexican people to go back to that point; and we can make a difference right now by taking care of some of these bureaucracies, and do it in a peaceful way.
Let me tell.. talk to you about the Mexicans, and these are just things I know about the negroes. I want to tell you one more thing I know about the negro.
When I go, went, go to Las Vegas, North Las Vegas; and I would see these little government houses, and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids . and there was always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch. They didnt have nothing to do. They didnt have nothing for their kids to do. They didnt have nothing for their young girls to do.
And because they were basically on government subsidy so now what do they do? They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never, they never learned how to pick cotton. And Ive often wondered are they were better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things? Or are they better off under government subsidy?
You know they didnt get no more freedom, uh they got less freedom they got less family life, and their happiness -you could see it in their faces- they were not happy sitting on that concrete sidewalk. Down there they was probably growing their turnips so thats all government, thats not freedom.
Now, let me talk about the Spanish people. You know I understand that they come over here against our constitution and cross our borders. But theyre here and theyre people and Ive worked side-by-side a lot of them.
Dont tell me they dont work, and dont tell me they dont pay taxes. And dont tell me they dont have better family structure than most of us white people. When you see those Mexican families, theyre together, they picnic together, theyre spending their time together, and Ill tell you in my way of thinking theyre awful nice people.
And we need to have those people join us and be with us . not, not come to our party.
And lets not forget the ton of slurs your dearest daddy spewed out yesterday.

I often think about their research when I hear RepubliBundys and their ilk in the various Tea Party factions expressing their amazement that everyone on their side isn't in complete agreement. (8,879 posts)in an academic setting would be far less offensive. In my African-American lit class this semester, we talk a lot about different perspectives on the effects of slavery. While becoming a slave is never a positive experience, Booker T Washington seemed to find some redemption in the wake of emancipation that many southern whites had lost a connection with, and in turn a base of knowledge and work ethic that would b&d required in a post slavery economy. Reconstruction would be a hard slough for former slaveholding whites who had grown dependent upon the system of forced labor, and for many blacks who for the first time in generations would be without the institutional certainty, granted an often harsh certainty of transfer between harsh and harsher masters, but indeed a certainty that had many black folks returning to serve their former masters in the similar role to slavery as perhaps what one might describe as form of wage slavery that is inherent in becoming an employee. This would supply a place for blacks in a reconstruction society.
So , while I find Bundy's specific framing to be idiotic, a look at the effects of slavery on social condition is not an altogether uninteresting one.
I personally agree with Oscar Wilde that slavery, especially slavery enacted by less harsh masters such as those portrayed in the beginning of a Uncle Tom's Cabin, is the most violent form of oppression, that is to say a slave who feels some allegiance or dependence upon his master is the most violently oppressed because he is conditioned to accept and rely on his oppressor.
