“You’re an intelligent man and I know that you would not risk your political career and your integrity for something as petty as lane closures on the George Washington Bridge,” Ludovico said, the crowd applauding.

He then asked how Christie how he should defend the governor to his friends who believe the Republican created a culture that permitted political retribution.

“What you can say to your friends who repeat that allegation is, you know, point to some factual, something that proves that,” Christie said. “Everything that we’ve done – 60 plus mayors and other Democrats endorsing us for re-election, 61 percent of the vote for reelection this past fall, winning the Hispanic vote, tripling the African American vote – this happens to someone who has created a culture of divisiveness? I don’t know. It would be probably one of the first times in the American history this actually happened.”

The governor also said for the first time that had anyone raised the idea of taking action to exact political revenge on the Fort Lee mayor to his attention, he would have intervened.

“If any body had ever come to me and told me they were going to do this, I would have stopped it,” he said.
