General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFolks, you have to take the Bundy Comments in their FULL Context and NOT the cherry picked statement
I strongly urge everybody to go listen to the entirety of Bundy's statements.
I must admit, those cherry picked comments in the New York Times paints a portrait of a man who seems to be pretty damned racist.
IF you listen to everything and not only what the New York Times printed, it becomes very evident that this poor old man is simply being mislabeled as pretty damned racist and should instead be considered an EXTREME RIGHT WING WHITE SUPREMACIST.
The statements printed in the New York Times were the most tame statements of a racist nature.

(3,531 posts)He sent out a long e-mail to all employees. The e-mail began with "Please read entire e-mail before proceeding" and then went on with a long list of requests for documentation regarding projects we were working on, estimated time left, etc. etc., and finally concluded with "Please ignore all the above, I just wanted to see who would read through to the bottom before continuing. Send me a reply when you have finished reading this."
I am happy to say I am one of the few who read it all the way through; many many fellow employees started wasting time trying to fulfill his demands (he WAS a rather demanding boss) and ended up with egg on face, and a wasted hour or two before he let them in on the joke.
Lesson: always read the entire post before commenting...

(5,610 posts)They do not want us to Unite.
Bundy, in his ignorant, entitled way is saying that non-whites are targeted for prison and police harassment. "They" including the media will twist anything to prevent Americans from Uniting and REVOLTing against them.
I do not like him or his cause but this is a great chance (that TPTB are "playing down", out of FEAR that Progressives, conservatives and all non-wealthy Americans may realize that the time has come) to stand up and demand equality.
Your call. Are you ready? I am and I will make it clear that I am standing against them and not for Bundy.

Theyre singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, I tell you what: These doggone white peoplenot a word!

(15,429 posts)Undocumented workers are cheap labor, and at times free labor (one might say "slave labor" , for unsavory ranchers. If Bundy's proven anything, it's that he is perfectly willing to lie cheat and steal to enrich himself and picking up some undocumented workers to get some work done on his ranch then telling them to leave because he's calling immigration would not be something he is incapable of.

(34,857 posts)It's a belief that the white man is superior in every way to the black man. It's absolutely the shit a white supremacist would push. (7,234 posts)Weve progressed quite a bit from that day until now, and sure dont want to go back; we sure dont want the colored people to go back to that point; we sure dont want these Mexican people to go back to that point; and we can make a difference right now by taking care of some of these bureaucracies, and do it in a peaceful way.
Let me tell.. talk to you about the Mexicans, and these are just things I know about the negroes. I want to tell you one more thing I know about the negro.
When I go, went, go to Las Vegas, North Las Vegas; and I would see these little government houses, and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids . and there was always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch. They didnt have nothing to do. They didnt have nothing for their kids to do. They didnt have nothing for their young girls to do.
And because they were basically on government subsidy so now what do they do? They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never, they never learned how to pick cotton. And Ive often wondered are they were better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things? Or are they better off under government subsidy?
You know they didnt get no more freedom, uh they got less freedom they got less family life, and their happiness -you could see it in their faces- they were not happy sitting on that concrete sidewalk. Down there they was probably growing their turnips so thats all government, thats not freedom.
Now, let me talk about the Spanish people. You know I understand that they come over here against our constitution and cross our borders. But theyre here and theyre people and Ive worked side-by-side a lot of them.
Dont tell me they dont work, and dont tell me they dont pay taxes. And dont tell me they dont have better family structure than most of us white people. When you see those Mexican families, theyre together, they picnic together, theyre spending their time together, and Ill tell you in my way of thinking theyre awful nice people.
And we need to have those people join us and be with us . not, not come to our party.

It puts Mr. Bundy's comment squarely in perspective.

(3,447 posts)...hispanic families in comparison to whites. I know when I hear neo-nazis talk, the very first thing they do is express admiration for non-whites over whites.
Personally I doubt the guy is intentionally racist. I think he doesn't keep up with modern terminology (and seriously, who does at his age?) and the 'shifting of the tides' and a bunch of people (read: us) expect him to be up to date with the most recent internet outrages and 'microaggressions'. I have no doubt we could affix a label of every single -ism we don't like to him. It's very, very easy to do so to anyone (and yes, I mean anyone).
Before someone decides I'm 'defending' him, I'm not. I'm saying that he's a product of his age and there's nothing to defend. The past is the past, and those who grew up in the past will remain inevitably tied to the past in the vast majority of cases. He's also in the twilight of life, and will be gone before we know it. His children and grandchildren will grow up in a different world and eventually every last vestige of the past will be gone, all without a single word of self-congratulatory browbeating from the Internet Hate Machine. Half the front page of this site is currently devoted to attacking a guy who we know from media presentations of less than a minute or two in length. Is he 'racist'? Probably, yes. In fact, quite probably. I doubt it's the intentional kind, or the 'my race is superior to yours' kind that the word meant until a couple years ago, but under the 'modern' definition, sure, I'll bet good money he is. Sexist? Almost certainly.
Hate-filled, evil, white supremacist? I suppose anything is possible, but I doubt it. But my gods, do we love to throw those words around.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)Undocumented workers are either extremely cheap or free labor, depending on how evil an unscrupulous rancher feels that day.

(3,447 posts)...a veritable guarantee.
I was only pointing out that that doesn't fit the criteria (imo) of a white supremacist. I don't think he's a good guy or anything of the sort. I think I'm more just very careful about labels than anything, given the sheer number I've had applied to me over the course of my life (with the vast majority of them being completely wrong).
