Today on the 700 Club, Pat Robertson pointed to British Prime Minister David Camerons recent description of the United Kingdom as a Christian country as a source of hope against the Islamist-atheist hordes attacking America.
This nonsense about separation of church and state has gotten way, way beyond the bounds of what the Founders of our Constitution thought, Robertson said. Were under assault by militant Islamists, militant atheists, secularists, those who want to destroy all of the fabric of faith in our society.
Later in the program, the televangelist warned that there are people representing the Muslim Brotherhood who are in the highest councils of the security apparatus of the United States of America advising our leaders as to how to deal with terrorism. Nonsense.

And no, we don't want to "destroy the fabric of faith in our society", we (atheists) just happen to think that you Fundies are totally batshit insane and are a danger to others and yourselves. We want you to keep your religious mitts off our lives, laws, and bodies.

(17,320 posts)I doubt the either of those men really believe what they are saying.
Personally, I've never heard of a "militant atheist".

(13,598 posts)I'm an atheist, and I think that the overreach of religion into civil society means that it needs to be militantly* opposed.
Richard Dawkins is an excellent (self-proclaimed) spokesman for militant atheism.
*"Militant" of course being idiomatic, not literal.

(17,320 posts)Personally, I'm very concerned about the "overreach of religion into civil society". Everything about it is wrong and dangerous.
But, I believe that atheists who describe themselves as "self-proclaimed" advocate of militant atheism would probably do more harm than good toward changing the existing wrongs.

(17,320 posts)Richard Dawkins. I've never heard of him and he may very well be "great".
If you mean that my statement about the chances of a "militant atheist" actually causing real change in the aggressiveness of
the Religious Right into politics then we simply have a case of two different opinions. I wish you and Mr. Dawkins well in your
political struggles.

I wouldn't like to take bets on which two of Robertson, Anjem Choudary and I despise one another's views the most, but there's no love lost in any direction.

(12,151 posts)Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, adherents of Shinto, agnostics, and atheists (militant and otherwise) each represent a more functional worldview than the terrifyingly stupid theocracy people like Pat and Newt and Hucklebee are proposing.
To the extent Christianity actually is losing any power in America, it's because people this are telling everyone they worship a god who hates everyone and lies about everything.
Nobody's going to worship that guy.
