General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI posed a question to 10 trusted DUers ...
and you know who you are ... The results are in!
4 Responded: "Go for it ... I'll laugh my a@@ off ... It'll be fun!"
4 Responded: "Don't do it ... It's not worth it"
and 2 responded, somewhere in between and gave great arguments for one way or the other.
I have decided to NOT do what I had been considering. Thanks for your feedback, folks.
I love DU ... it's populated with some really, really smart folks.

I checked and their therapy will indeed be covered under Obamacare. Good news~

Will ObamaCare cover that?

Never could figure out why the guy let old Magnum drive the shit out of his car...!
Why can't I ever land a gig like that? I'm outta the military, I wouldn't mind living in some rich guy's house and driving his Ferrari!! I'd happily pal around with a guy with a helo who makes his money showing tourists the coastline, and who always manages to have plenty of fuel!

(24,370 posts)That old guy that owned the mansion was played by the fine character actor John Hillerman who played "Higgins" in all 158 episodes.
The voice of KITT was played by another fine character actor, William Daniels, whose credits include "St. Elsewhere" and "Boy Meets World"
Edit to say...sorry....TV was all we had back then!
MADem
(135,425 posts)The owner of the estate was the mysterious "Robin Masters"--not Higgins. They tried, towards the end, to introduce a few twists that suggested Magnum thought Higgins owned the place but it did not marry up with previous plot expositions and they never took it further--it was a device that went nowhere. The premise:
With Magnum living a luxurious life on the Estate and operating as a P.I. on cases that suit him, the only thorn in the side of this seemingly perfect lifestyle on the Estate, is Jonathan Quayle Higgins III (played by Texas-born veteran actor John Hillerman), an ex-British Army Sergeant Major, a (on the surface) stern, "by-the-book" ex-soldier whose strict ways usually conflict with Magnum's much more easy-going methods. He patrols Robin's Nest with his two highly trained "lads", Doberman Pinschers, Zeus and Apollo. Often as a humorous aside during various episodes of the series, Magnum must bargain with Higgins for use of estate amenities other than the guest house and the Ferrari 308 GTS (e.g., tennis courts, wine cellar, expensive cameras). The relationship between Magnum and Higgins was initially that almost of a "friendly nemesis", but as the series progressed over the seasons, an unspoken respect and fondness of sorts grew between the pair, and as such, many episodes dedicated more screen time to this "odd couple" pairing after the relationship proved popular with fans.
A recurrent theme throughout the last two seasons (starting in the episode "Paper War" involves Magnum's suspicion that Higgins is actually Robin Masters since he opens Robin's mail, calls Robin's Ferrari "his car", etc. This possibility is contradictory to numerous references throughout the series' earlier run (e.g. phone calls from abroad; the fact that Robin is recognised by famous people). Although the three of them have been together before, Magnum is convinced that Higgins hired an actor to play Robin Masters (a short rotund guy with an Orson Welles voice, as Magnum puts it).
Aside from Higgins, Magnum's two other main cohorts on the islands are Theodore "T.C." Calvin (Roger E. Mosley), who runs local helicopter charter service Island Hoppers - and so often finds himself persuaded by Magnum to fly him during various cases; and Rick Wright (Larry Manetti) (who refuses to use his birth name, Orville), who owns a local bar. In the Pilot, this was "Rick's Place" in town, inspired by Casablanca, with Rick appearing in suitable 1930s attire. However after completion of the Pilot, executives on the series felt that audiences would be unable to fully connect with this element, and instead Rick moved to running the plush beachside King Kamehameha Club - which has exclusive membership and Higgins on the board of directors, and yet Magnum often strolls around, using the facilities and running up an ever unpaid tab, further fueling the Magnum / Higgins feud. T.C. and Rick are both former Marines from VMO-2 with whom Magnum served in the Vietnam War.[2] The series was one of the first to deal with Vietnam veterans as "human beings" and not as shell-shocked killers, and was praised by many ex-servicemen groups for doing so. Magnum often dupes, tricks or bribes T.C. and Rick into aiding him in various ways on the cases he works on, much to their frustration, though the deep friendship between the group, including Higgins, proved to be one of the key elements of the series over its eight-season run.
Magnum seemingly lives a dream lifestyle: he comes and goes as he pleases, works only when he wants to, has the almost unlimited use of a Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole as well as many other of Robin Masters luxuries. He keeps a mini-fridge with a seemingly endless supply of beer ("Old Dusseldorf in a long neck" , wears his father's treasured Rolex GMT Master wristwatch, is seemingly surrounded by countless beautiful women (who are often victims of crime, his clients or connected in various other ways to the cases he solves). Other characteristics specific to Magnum are his thick mustache, a Detroit Tigers baseball hat, and a variety of colorful Aloha shirts.
Nearly every episode is narrated, in voice-over, by Magnum at various points; and Magnum and Higgins often break the fourth wall by locking eyes with or, occasionally, directly addressing the audience; other characters also do this, though less frequently.
At the end of the seventh season, Magnum was to be killed off, which was intended to end the series. The final episode of the season, "Limbo", after seeing Magnum wander around as a ghost for nearly the entire run-time, closes with him seemingly walking off into heaven. However, following outcry from fans, who demanded a more satisfactory conclusion, an eighth, final season was produced, to bring Magnum "back to life", and to round the series off.[3] A number of other episodes also make reference to supernatural occurrences and the seeming existence of ghosts.
I'm surprised the synopsis didn't include the grape smuggler shorts that were popular in the era!

rrneck
(17,671 posts)You found it necessary to broadcast you had a private conversation with people "whose opinion you value", inferring of course that you don't value the opinions of everybody else here.
I trust you PM'd the "select ten" to thank them for their sage advice.
I love these trips down memory lane to the seventh grade when it was important to prove you're a member of a select few by announcing participation in an inside joke. Good times.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)That was the whole point of this thread. You might have picked that up from my writing:
I love DU ... it's populated with some really, really smart folks.
And the other part of that Seventh Grade journey was those that loudly proclaimed, "I don't care if they play with me at recess", while spending their entire recess, watching the group that they did not want to be a part of ... I guess the journey continues, huh?
rrneck
(17,671 posts)there would be nothing to watch.
And if you could send ten PM's to ask a question, you could send ten PM's to thank people for the answers. There's a reply link on each PM. You could even C&P "Thanks for your feedback, folks" into your reply.
Maybe we should ask Skinner to make certain posts an entirely different color so we can tell who the cool kids are. We could call them "CliqueBlocks" or something and every time the members of the clique have an important conversation there could be a group xpost link to make it easier to broadcast their activity.
Maybe Elad could even program a Sorting Hat.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)the folks I intended to reach have seen it ... well, all but one has yet to appear in this thread.
Thank you for telling me what I could've/should've done ... I chose a different course. But thanks, anyway!
Or maybe, you could just get over this not being about you?
rrneck
(17,671 posts)Well, until I made it about me.
Do you always choose "trusted DUers" in groups of ten, or do you make non denary exceptions if they are really cool? I guess the secret decoder rings are cheaper in groups of ten.
I think I'll go to the local train station and announce that I just got advice from ten different people, see if anybody gives a shit.

I'll include you next time ... I promise!
rrneck
(17,671 posts)and that's what you were looking for. And I give you points for soldiering on in the face of your embarrassment.
I find it fascinating that most DUers seem to be in their fifties and sixties but for some reason the internet turns them into juveniles. You were wondering something, you asked ten people by email, and found it necessary to announce the fact on an anonymous message board. You posted the OP and found it necessary to announce that almost all of the people to whom you addressed your inquiry had replied in this thread. Boy howdy, you guys are really on the ball! Do the people to whom you directed your inquiry feel used? I wonder.
The OP screams "Lookit me, lookit me! I got ten people to respond to an inside joke in a public place." Really, only kids find it necessary to stake out turf like that.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I don't understand half of what people are talking about sometimes. This time i'm in on it, and you want to take that from me.
No i don't feel used, not by him, since you wondered. Best op of the day i'm sure.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)Half the time I don't understand what I'm talking about.
Generally speaking it's rude and exclusionary to announce membership in an ingroup to others who are not members of that group. It's an inside joke at the expense of others. And what amounts to a contrived conversation just so he can announce it here is, or at least should be, an embarrassing ploy for attention.
This is General Discussion. The creation of subject matter not available to be generally discussed is rude.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)He's a kind man and wouldn't do that unless provoked. It's about him deciding not to discuss what he wants to discuss at this time. He may post it later if he feels like the time is right.
The internet is chock full of contrived discussions, even here where there are inside jokes all the time that exclude us. It's funny how it is such a concern when 1 strong black man does it, but third way manny (and others)does his inside jokes all the time. Do you also tell him similar things about clarifying what he posts so that we all may understand? I'll check and see if you also get on them. Brb.

And all of those in on the joke on that thread that thoroughly enjoyed making fun of us are shameful small minded folks who would never say anything like that to our faces. But they condemn the words white privilege, while using that privilege to mock us. And somehow we end up being the bad guy. Just take Mr. derp down thread. You would think he would leave a brotha alone after the piece of shit heard around the world thread that encouraged republicans. But nope! Black man speaks, must mock him.

Right around the late '90s/early '2000s, my office got a spate of complaints from white folks about Mexicans speaking Spanish on the job. They to a person felt mistreated . In the end, you know what their concern was? That the Mexicans might have been talking about them.

I checked btw, and you said nothing to Manny or anyone else about having inside jokes. Why is it that 1Strong black man irritates you so, simply by doing what many others do daily? You may need a bit of self reflection. I could tell you the answer but you would not believe me.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)How many conversations have I had with 1Strong black man? How many threads like Manny's have I voted to lock in the hosts forum? What makes you think I'm irritated? Do you really expect universal approval on an internet forum? Do you think every post will be some sort of accolade and nobody will point out behavior that any child would understand?
So 1BM ran his little test and what did he prove? Rude behavior is rude? Wow. Alert Scientific American.
What else happened? Exclusive camaraderie. Leadership roles. Structured loyalty. Factionalism. Suspicion. Envy.
It really easy to build a cadre of followers as long as you're willing to tell them what they want to hear. Internet forums are almost designed to pander to confirmation bias.
The fact still remains that hoarding information to manipulate people is simply rude behavior and proves nothing related to the information being hoarded, but it says a great deal about the hoarders.
Now who's too clever by half?

I am a white male. Why does that matter?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)My stepfather was white. He always told me that a black man and a white man can make the same mistake, but usually nobody notices the white guy, but the black guy will always be noticed. They can't help it, and most don't even realize that they judge black people harsher. Makes me sad.

If you are calling me racist, say so. Otherwise, just pipe down. I got this.
If you need something explained to you, let me know, i will school you in this matter.
Black people get judged harsher than white people because white people do the judging. We get noticed immediately for what we do, while a white person can do the same exact thing and may not even be noticed. If you want to tell me that i'm racist for noticing that black people get judged harsher, then i have a few things to say back to you that you will not like, that may make you question yourself.
Are you sure you want to do this?
Egnever
(21,506 posts)Well please proceed.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Do you have something further to say? If not, you are dismissed. Have a nice whatever you are doing.
maybe the "rrneck" handle threw you off a little bit. Know what it stands for? Renaissance redneck. I started out life as a tractor jockey in the south and wound up an artist. One of the finest professors I ever had was a black man. And since I went to graduate school in the north, the minute I opened my mouth people assumed I wore a pillow case on my head on the weekends or I was at least an idiot redneck. I proved them wrong. And yes, I found it insulting. I've been down more cultural backstreets and alleys than most people you know.
So you appear to have leapt to the conclusion that I took the OP to task because he's black. There is really no reason to think that, but if you want to research it you have about seventeen thousand opportunities to find a racist sentiment. When you're done with that, think about what just happened here. Someone posts an OP that will bring some sort of criticism (what OP doesn't?). It has been frontloaded with certain expectations so that whatever criticisms are offered they can be interpreted as racially motivated. Shoot, the racist probably doesn't even know it's racist. Cui bono? I really can't say. But I know who the losers are.
Factionalism creates circular firing squads. There will always be someone willing to profit from human tribal instincts, that's how brand loyalty works from soap flakes to religion. I should be insulted because of your insinuation of racism. Strike that. I am insulted. And if you want to make an accusation it would be in your best interest to bring more evidence than some contrived internet bait and switch. But I'll get over it, because I know how it feels when people draw all kinds of bad conclusions about me based on superficial evidence.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Would not make sense. I'm questioning your consistancy and saying that if you are going to do this with him, you need to do it with everybody. And i told you that (most) white people do not notice they are doing it, it's not on purpose.
You just happened to handle it just like i thought you would. Which made me suspect you were, 1 not female, 2 white.
I just want to know why you haven't bothered to call out others who do the same thing. Why would you start with him. Did you call out Will Pitt or Manny? Their op were much worse, yet this op merits your disgust. I hope you were on those threads expressing your dissapproval, if not, then why this one? It should bother you that we, black people feel picked on here at DU at times and that there are so few of us. But if this is how you are going to respond to this innocuous thread, while letting many others by white DUer slide under the radar, what do you expect? Us not to feel 'more noticed'?
Go read the AA forum and see how we experience DU. It will help you understand and i believe in the future you will be more lenient with your judgements and may feel a bit bad.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)Rudeness in not confined to any particular race. And again, you need to research the hosts forum and see how many of Manny's threads like this I have voted to lock. Yes, the OP is rude and manipulative. I have explained why here, here, here and here.
And just so we are up to speed, you have decided I am a racist whether I know it or not based on a single exchange on an anonymous internet message board. Would you accept an evaluation like that? How would you feel if somebody treated you like that?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Did i? No.
If i were going to say that i would be direct.
Do you really want me to break it down again?
White guy: write ops calling black man piece of shit. You refuse to state whether you jumped on his case.
Black man: writes op. Thanking ten secret squirels for help. Says duer's are very smart. You go on the attack.
I'm asking you why you would do that, and why are you mad at me for noticing?
Why do worse ops slide under your radar, but one from one of the last black duers left has you all riled up? Do you want us to just leave or something?
Your level of disgust is too high for it to be normal. There are much worse ops that you do not say anything about. It's wrong what you are doing. You should probably stop.
I am only guilty of unconscious racism. That's a relief. I guess. If you don't think I'm a racist, why are we having this conversation?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)That we are treated different and get noticed and judged harsher. I want you to notice and be able to be rational.
If you see rude ops by white people and never say anything to them, and this is the first time you've decided to be super offended enough to protest inthread, i want to know why and to let you know what it looks like. Because you cant even tell me what he said that was so rude. This is why we have so few of us here and the number is dwindling. And it should concern you just as much as it concerns me.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)The links are above.
I have encouraged you to actually do research. You will find that I make a habit of getting in people's faces when they are unfair.
I will ask you directly: Do you think my response to the OP was racially motivated? And before you answer, do you think it is fair to insinuate as much to make a point?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)That is my point.
I think that you read too much into the op because of who posted it.
If it had been someone else i do not believe you would have taken it that way.
Your explaination of it's rudeness is weak when you compare it to the ops i referenced that you did not call rude. You said nothing to them. Remained silent. But now you speak out here where a man is thanking people for input and calling duers smart. To you, thats rude. You are wrong and going way overboard trying to make it seem like this op is rude.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)or tired.
Here is the OP:
I posed a question to 10 trusted DUers ...
and you know who you are ...
---------------------------------------------------------------
The phrase "ten trusted DUers" insinuates that the bulk of the rest of DU is not to be trusted. Rude. It refers to subject matter to be discussed in a public forum known only to those insiders. Rude and exclusionary. The OP later goes on to boast that was his intent. Intentionally rude. The previous topic under discussion was designed to bait other members to reply either to praise them or to flay them depending on their responses. Manipulatively rude. And of course, he is not saying that all DUers are smart since he is referring to those ten who offered sage advice who, we can reasonably assume, were chosen by him. Arrogantly rude.
I could ask what the OP is really about, but I think we already know. You've long since let that cat out of the bag.
It's rude to manipulate people to give yourself the opportunity to praise or damn them for your own enjoyment or personal aggrandizement. Just plain rude.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Thats what i mean by reading too much into it. He choose to use an op to thank the ten who counseled him.
Arrogantly rude? Arrogant? I feel for you that you cannot understand no matter how many times i tell you that you are wrong.
He never says anything to make you insinuate anything but you do put words in his mouth, and then have the gall to say he's the rude one.
You are too mad for this to be normal. He says nothing rude. You filled in the blanks for yourself and you did it wrong.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)What is the purpose of the OP?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)And to let them know the forthcoming op with be postponed. Until nov 5. Can't discuss the subject because it's a surprise. How is that rude to let your peers know that there has been a delay and to thank them? He may not have wanted to write separate emails, and probably never guessed anybody besides the ten would respond.
I thank him for letting me know not to expect it soon as i was waiting for it.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)Each response email has a reply link. It's not hard. I'm sure he never guessed he would get more than ten responses in General Discussion. Whoda thunk that?
Then this OP is little more than viral marketing to create a little advance buzz for the upcoming main event I guess. No manipulative grandstanding there. Nope. Not at all.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Who is he trying to manipulate? You? Yeah right! This thread was more about me than you.
It's a thank you thread.
Now you're accusing him of snowdening. Thats rude, he gave a date upthread, nov 5. It bothers you too much to be normal, i'm sorry, it just seems strange that this op is the 'one' that gets your goat.
He can do it by op, or use his email. He chose this way. I'm totally fine with that. You should be too.
Don't be like that.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)And accusing me of being angry won't help. I'm perfectly fine with what he posts. But this is a public forum and an OP is an invitation for comment, which I have done. You have no doubt already discovered that if I think someone is wrong I won't hesitate to tell them.
These little sub threads make for fascinating reading, don't you think?
bravenak
(34,648 posts)Nobody was talking about you behind your back. It's a simple thank you, with a little look at us thrown in.
Sub threads are awesome, i love them. Best jokes found therein.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)And among all the DU membership, I'm about the last one anyone would be interested in to talk about "behind his back". I have little need for self aggrandizement.
bravenak
(34,648 posts)I'll keep working with you on it and you'll see the light.
You're still stuck on the ten trusted duers thingy? At least he didn't say ' the only ten duers i trust". If he had said that i would agree with you that it was rude. He just happened to decide to limit himself to ten. Makes sense unless he wanted to post a poll. He's saying thanks to us, not because he is rude, but because he has manners.
it happens all the time. People constantly answer PM's in General Discussion.
I've explained it five (!) times already. I'll leave it up to others to draw their own conclusions. All they have to do is read the thread.

Are you saying that you hold the bulk of opinions on DU, or anywhere else, as equally trust-worthy and counsel-worthy? Please ... Not rude; but rational.
Yes ... It was my intent to thank those that I invited to provide input into a question I posed. How is that "intentionally rude" unless you feel entitled to weigh in on all discussions posed to whomever.
No ... how do you arrive at that conclusion?
Wow ... First I DO NOT consider all duer equally smart; but I DO consider the 10, as able to give good counsel.
And if you had ... I would have responded with a plain and clear, "None of your business ... just because something is posted to a public message board doesn't mean I'm obligated to clue you in, nor are in entitled to know."
rrneck

(82,383 posts)It doesn't follow that the rest of the DUers are not to be trusted.
rrneck
(17,671 posts)But we aren't dealing in facts here. That's part of the problem. Important facts have been withheld. The question to ask is not who is or isn't trustworthy, but why was the insinuation made?
Apparently this is some sort of meta thing or buzz creation for feature presentations to come. Either way, it's still rude and manipulative. Certainly any seven year old child knows better than to pointedly exclude others from a conversation.

That you have to ask others is telling but, to be honest, not totally off base around DU anymore. Any given day out of all the people on Du 4 can decide your post should be hidden while another 4 members never asked could decide it is fine (we call it 'community standards' but it is only based on what a few in the community think so it is more 'my personal standards and what I don't like and you shouldn't either').
In a big tent you will offend someone. Always. If in doubt post elsewhere where folks are more open to all views (and you probably won't like all the replies or posts you see but that doesn't mean crap, it's just part of life that people won't see everything the same way). It has taken me a lot of years on du and other boards for some things to sink in. Guess my mind was just as stubborn on that as other things. I welcome other views, ideas, challenges to my own way of thinking about an issue.

I was bored the other day. Really, really bored. I was so bored that I googled bored just for the heck of it. After all, you never know what youll find on Google.
I found the Bored Button.
Then I made the mistake of pressing the Bored Button. It was a true OMG moment. I was lost in an alternate reality. It was fun, even a little intoxicating. It then, spun into a "Look at Me!" post (which I claim and accept) and that became the out-rage and great sin ... except calling President Obama a POS Used Car Salesman, while mischaracterizing that Democratic President's signature legislative achievement, and another "Look at Me!" thread that blatantly made fun of Black folks, in general, and Black DUers, in particular, remain perfectly acceptable.

Because there is so much trustworthiness in staking a claim that someone did you wrong, but you don't have the ability to straight up COMMUNICATE with them.

(135,425 posts)I think this entire thread has been VERY enlightening, and the reactions to it are a study in attitudes and world-views. You've got the Trusted Ten who know the score, you've got a crew who don't know the score but they are amused by, and supportive of, the whole process on a macro level, and then you've got a gaggle that thinks that it's all about them, that there's some "code" or "dog whistle" super secret StrongBlackMan nudge wink and they, themselves, each one of 'em, personally, is being insulted, and dammit, This. Shall. Not. STAND!!!!

(31,849 posts)And, much to my dismay ... they go out of their way to prove me wrong, every damned time someone reminds them that it's not about them!

(31,849 posts)People of Color, on this site, have been trying to bring this fact to light, since ... well ... forever.
Visit the African-American Group (if you haven't been), pick any discussion on/of Racism and read through it. Focus on the vast majority of what the identifiably Black posters are saying. You will see white "liberals" (not all, but a significant number) attempting to define the terms and set the parameters of the discussion (in ways that conveniently exonerates themselves and absolves them from any action ... other than telling us how we should feel/what we should do to deal with racism); and the then look at the identifiably Black posters' consistent reply.
In a sense, PoC (and all "minorities" serve as the societal mirror, that America (particularly, "liberal" America) refuses to peer into.

(14,341 posts)That I am one of the "it-getters" around here.
The dismissive arrogance that gets passed off as enlightened progressivism isn't lost on me. The sad attempts to "satirize" your POV are smarmy beyond belief.

Bobbie Jo

lumberjack_jeff
(33,224 posts)And If I was unclear, it would have been less passive-aggressive and defamatory to have asked for clarification.
What I said is that race isn't the only social dimension that many white liberals (like me) don't get.
To the extent that many (most? all?) white liberals don't understand what it is like to be black, it can largely be attributed to ignorance.
In contrast, class bias among liberals mostly isn't about ignorance, and the excerpted Orwell quote illustrates the problem well.
Given the cryptic nature of the OP, it would have been reasonable to give respondents some benefit of the doubt for not knowing the ground rules for subsequent comments.

If y'all stop whispering when you see me, then get huffy about how you should have the right to have public conversations about secret plans that concern doing something divisive and get all defensive about it when all I did was read your post and comment on the tone which I clearly did not misread, I must conclude that the giggling and tittering I hear as I walk by is directed at me -- well yes -- then I do start feeling excluded. (27,787 posts)... there is that segment around here who sees themselves as the "good liberals", and as such, they can sit in judgement as to who else is a "good liberal", or not.
And that perspective expands to most, if not all topics, including race.
Generic Other
(28,979 posts)I opened your post because I always want to hear what you have to say because I think you are an intelligent person. As for these mystery PMs, I didn't get 'em and I half-kiddingly posted about feeling left out. Do you really think all DUers whose views you don't agree with are involved in a collective effort via talking points in PM's to discredit what you say? <Sigh> Now I really feel left out.
Admittedly, I didn't read the whole thread, just yours and a few others when I responded earlier up thread to your piece. After I read through the thread more carefully, I could better see where you were coming from. I didn't really know what other OP's, thread/s, poster/s set you off, but I felt I probably contributed because I have criticized certain of the president's policies and I have defended or agreed with other DUers who did so as well.
But I object to being accused of being part of a hoard who exchanges talking points before posting here. I have my own opinions. Who else would want them? Seriously! I kill threads by posting on them. And I forcefully share my opinions on DU. You do too. I absolutely support every DUers' right to speak their minds on this board whether I agree or not. I hate 9/10ths of the alerts. Absolutely hate them as revisionism. I try to listen to opposing views, and engage those voices whose views I find interesting. Admittedly, I probably rant more than I listen, but I can also be swayed by reasonable arguments. I hope I can always be honest, and that I can't be bought. While I may disagree with another DUer in the heat of an argument, I rarely hold long lasting grudges except against the BFEE -- and only because they should be brought to justice. And I do not want to be thought a racist anymore than I would want to be thought of as any other kind of bully. Please accept my apology if in thought or action, I acted in such a fashion.
When I first came to DU, we were all united in our marginalization. Every one of us was viewed as a "sore loser," "conspiracy theorist," "moonbat..." We spent eight years getting beat up. We came out of it bloody and bruised, hardened by the experience. I think I have had PTSD through half of Obama's term. It is what it is. My political transformation parallels that of a lot of DUers. We share general ideals and goals, but we have never fully agreed on much else. We have all been like Sisyphus pushing that boulder uphill, then having it roll back down over us. And every time it rolled backward, we lost ground. That's not all on Obama or Democrats by any means, and it shouldn't be about race, but I understand why it is inevitably about race because this is not something one can separate from this president, especially given the way many of his detractors (most notably the tea party and Fox News) have acted toward him. But on DU, it should not be about race. It should be about policy, the struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tide of crazy we are holding back on the other side of the divide and how we fight back. That's the real horde. Out there trying to break down the door. The right wing invaders that threaten us all. If our troops are in disarray, with some of us accused of undermining the cause, we need to recognize what we are doing wrong and find a solution. The midterm elections are a good chance for us to win some hearts and minds. Maybe we need to focus our energy on that rather than reducing DU to ashes for some pyrrhic victory.
I dread what's heading our way as it is.

Generic Other
(28,979 posts)so I don't think I should get a pass if criticizing our president in strong words is going to be viewed as racism toward him. I am concerned that I don't come off that way. I do not want to dog whistle or code talk or any of that disingenuous crap because on a personal level I respect and admire him greatly, even feel some satisfaction that he has been able to win victories in spite of the hard wall of rightwing opposition. Everyone on DU fought for him and cheered when he won (well maybe not the so-called disappointed Hilary cougars) but everyone else will always see him as the one who saved us from McCain, Palin and Romney. But some of us are really very far to the left, and we have felt this inextricable pull to the right that nothing we try to do seems to stop. So we screech a bit too stridently perhaps because we don't know how to better deal with our frustrations about the things he has not been able to accomplish or even sometimes seems uninterested in accomplishing. I have walked a very thin tightrope on this. Mad some days. Rooting for him to win others. Is it possible that a lot of DUers who seem angry at Obama go through these same emotions? We pinned way too many hopes on him. Superhuman expectations. And some of us have been boorish about it. I can see that now, so I thank you for continuing to drive that point home.
I continually tell myself that the right is so obviously filled with racists dicks that it should be evident to even the blind. But not everyone else agrees. And sometimes I think people (myself included) get mad at the president when we should yell at the right more and call them on their crap toward him. I have thought that for the past 6 years, Obama's presidency has let us all be people of color in some small measure because we have had to endure the shameful treatment he has been accorded by the more extreme factions of the teabag party. Meanwhile we at DU do tend to kind of pick at each other rather than address this issue because it makes people uncomfortable to talk about. The real people we should be mad at don't post at DU. Clearly, sometimes our anger is misdirected.
I agree with those who warn us not to chart a new centrist path. I agree with those who want to scream in frustration at the influence corporations and the very wealthy exert in politics. Both sides yell -- perhaps a bit too loud and often. And I believe both sides are sincere in their opinions. I have fought side-by-side with many DUers. And in bare knuckle fights against some of them. I have come to accept that many of us are exactly as you see us. A cross section of the Democratic party. Only united by a few thin threads. DU is like a crazy family re-union. Someone spikes the punchbowl and all hell breaks loose. Someone's drunken uncle pees in the flowerbed. Someone covers the children's eyes. Someone else is laughing. Another person is cussing. Suddenly there's potato salad and jello flying in the air. And the police show up. Afterwards, no one quite knows what to say, but we all tsk tsk over it forever. Clearly if you do or say something stupid on the internet it will come back to haunt you forever!
Anyway, thanks for starting this thread. I believe you had valid reasons. And you left me with something to think about -- whether it was about me or not.

And probably every bit as illuminating. The haters could not have outed themselves more beautifully and highlighted more succinctly what the posters of color that still dwell here have to deal with.
Major props to 1SBM, Morpheus and especially Bravenak. Her posts shone like gold.

(83,786 posts)It was illuminating, they showed up in grand style. The cameo appearances of Manny and Pitt were priceless.
Then that one poster, that relentlessly told 1SBM to take it else where, put it in The Lounge or just send PM's to the ten. 1SBM rude? I don't think so! That reeks of White Authoritarian BS! Again and again he "told" 1SBM and bravenak what they meant, when said poster had no clue. It was said posters "opinion" and therefore fact. Again White Authoritarian!
Oh and I know that you caught the statement from said poster that we were being used and abused by 1SBM, for posting this. Really?
It burns the hell out of me, I can only imagine what it does to you.
I came home from work and saw bravenak's idiotic hide. Just goes to show this magnificent thread struck home. I will bet my bottom dollar on who sent that alert!
for this thread! Academy Award material!

(6,228 posts)I am at a loss. I fail to see why the topic would even have been created, but for a desire to attain attention (negative OR positive) at any cost. Further, what the hell is generating almost 500 posts? Can't we talk about more interesting things like breastfeeding at Olive Garden, homeschooling or rape culture?
