Geneva agreement crumbles in Kyiv and Donetsk

City workers clean up trash around the barricades fortifying the Maidan on April 23.

On the morning of April 23, tractors began clearing the barricades on Independence Square in Kyiv. At first, seemed like it might be a small step towards fulfilling the provisions agreed upon by the U.S., EU, Russia, and Ukraine in Geneva on April 17.

The quadrilateral Geneva Statement, which was aimed at de-escalating separatist tensions in eastern Ukraine also applies to protesters in Kyiv. It stipulates that those who surrender government buildings, vacate public spaces, and lay down their arms will be offered amnesty, unless they have committed a capital offense.

Though the Geneva Statement has provided a glimmer of hope that the ongoing crisis in Ukraine will be resolved diplomatically and peacefully, the barricades aren’t going anywhere, and neither are the men behind them: city workers on the barricades on Independence Square told the Kyiv Post that they simply wanted to clear scorched tires, plastic bags, and other detritus, and that they would allow the protesters to refortify their barricades.

Protesters remain on the Maidan in part because of the fear that the Russian troops that recently began popping up in eastern Ukraine will soon be on Kyiv's doorstep.

The words of the senior figure in Pravy Sektor, a far-right Ukrainian nationalist movement, were clear and adamant. "The revolution is not finished yet," said Andriy Tarasenko. "And the aim of the revolution is to break the old system."

Far-right parties are set to do well in next month’s elections to the European Parliament, a fact that has thrown a spotlight on their links with the Kremlin. A recent study by the Budapest-based Political Capital Institute documents the support that far-right parties in the EU have given to Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly throughout the Ukraine crisis. These parties repeated the Kremlin’s line that it is the EU and the West, rather than Russia, which are provoking tension and fueling violence in the Eastern European country.

Several far-right politicians went to observe the Crimea referendum on re-joining Russia, a vote they said was free and fair although it was denounced as illegitimate by most Western leaders. Among those that went were politicians from far-right or populist parties in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France and Hungary.

Hungary’s Jobbik and Greece’s Golden Dawn are both invited to the Russian National Forum organised by a group with close ties to Putin to be held later this year. Admiration for Putin also extends to Europe’s softer right-wing. Nigel Farage, leader of the eurosceptic UK Independence Party, has openly backed Putin as a skillful "operator".

Amid the controversy and debate about the state of EU-Russia relations, Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s National Front, headed to Moscow for the second time this year. ... During the visit Le Pen asserted her support for Russia in the Ukrainian crisis, blaming the EU for declaring a new "cold war on Russia”.

Right wingers in Europe - as elsewhere - as pro-nationalist, anti-EU types. Putin shares this attitude with them. My guess is that the Pravy Sektor will not be invited to too many meetings hosted by the European far-right until they get on board with their pro-Putin agenda.

pro-Russians in the East must leave immediately.
Why is Ukraine so important to the West to the point that the Secretary of State and head of the CIA were there?

Anyone who still has doubts about who financed the pro-Western coup should have all the answers they need by now.

is that when they are owned , as they will be , they'll do exactly what they're told to do by their new owners.....the IMF, the EU and the US. Elections will become arbitrary - regardless of party you won't be able to tell the pigs from the humans.

It tries to codify the imperialist involvement of ALL the parties, the EU, the USA, AND the Russian Federation and take any and all power away from the Ukrainian people. The agreement will make Ukraine and various sectors OF Ukraine client states of the Imperials.

And as you said, it legitimizes the unelected interim government in the west, INCLUDING the fascist elements and delegitimizes the protestors in the east.
