(34,172 posts)When asked about it, he called himself an NRA Democrat.

(973 posts)But perhaps I will also donate to Bloomies new anti-gun violence group.

(752 posts)Your fact is important. I hate guns. I will vote for Carter and I want him to win.

(34,172 posts)I just want people to understand the political realities of Democrats in GA.

(54,770 posts)I love Jimmy Carter now, but he did the same to get elected governor. Hard to tell if that is how they really feel, or just what they are willing to say/support to get elected in a red state.
CottonBear
(21,596 posts)He got redistricted several times and took pro gun positions to get re-elected as a Democrat to the congress. He is a Harvard Law graduate and former Athens-Clarke County commissioner. I know John. His father was a judge in Athens. When John was a commissioner, he was vilified (by the GOP) as a leftist liberal.
I have a very young child in a great public school in GA.
Now, this morning, I am so scared and worried about his safety and my safety.
Chiquitita
(752 posts)are worth it. I'll vote for him too, with gusto.

(973 posts)I'm having a hard time right now and your sig line really helped me to focus..
I hope you feel great today. I'm saving quotations I like -- here's a good one: Fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

(205,489 posts)And he was speculating on who could possibly support these terrible gun laws. He said that college presidents certainly don't want guns on campuses, that they could lead to more campus suicides, let alone his fellow ministers, who certainly don't want guns in their churches. David Letterman needs to bring back his "Stooge of the Night," RW members of Congress who vote for these gun laws despite opposition from the vast majority of their constituents.

(40 posts)Georgia college students are allowed to keep firearms in their vehicles on campus. I don't think you can make a valid argument that those few hundred feet keep people from shooting themselves in their dorms. I digress it is still against the law for just anyone to carry a weapon on Georgia college campuses. Churches also are allowed to forbid the carry of weapons on their property. I hope I was able to clear some things up for those who are interested.
Rhiannon12866
(205,489 posts)I could easily have looked it up, but took what the minister said at face value. I know that the new law doesn't take effect until July, but the news media portrayed it as quite extreme. Welcome to DU, Brown Coat!
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)There are plenty of Zimmermans and Dunns in Georgia colleges, churches, etc.
I don't think Deal signed anything allowing guns in government offices, because even that old fool knows there are a lot of ignorant yahoos who will strap guns on to get their driver licenses, watch Republicans run the legislature, etc., to be safe. My guess is that churches who will welcome toting yahoos have a high percentage of white/right wingers in the congregation.

(40 posts)I would much rather avoid a confrontation than resort to violence. Funny thing is I know A lot of people who feel the same way, they are from all walks of life and every color of the rainbow as well. All of which carry or are proficient with a firearm to defend themselves at home.

(40 posts)Never, if we go drinking the firearms get put in the safe. The DD is typically carrying however, again only at places we knew we were welcome.

(40 posts)I think we are about to get away from the OP but If you send me a message I would like to continue our discussion. Carrying a weapon on your person across a Georgia college campus is still against the law.

(5,103 posts)There has not been a political assasination succeed since Kennedy. We have had a few near misses and then the nutjob who shot Gabby Giffords.
What happens if the empowered mentally ill take advantage and target the enablers? Government buildings surely includes the governor's office, doesn't it? I bet the congress will feel so much better with so many walking their halls, AKs and other war toys openly carried. Pity the security guards, outgunned. Why do they assume that only Repubs have a weapon?
Will the NRA toadies still stay the pro-gun course? Will anyone care or are we so inured that it just doesn't matter?
WTF is going to make this madness stop?

(6,635 posts)continues to finance right-wing politicians with marching orders from their masters, the NRA/ALEC/Koch Brothers "guns for everyone" campaign. More guns in more places means more profits for the death merchants, who in turn pay commissions to the NRA and the right-wing gun lobby. It is a neoconservative self-perpetuating circle of death and violence.
Right-wing neo-Nazi militias and the KKK will rejoice in this gun madness -- not only in Georgia, but in the entire Red State Tea Party demographical area. Bundy can expect more armed support the next time he decides to stand up for "his right" to steal from American taxpayers and promote the violent overthrow of our government.

(6,635 posts)the second link:
http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112878/harry-reid-and-wayne-lapierre-why-senator-and-nra-ceo-broke
It isn't a matter of Harry Reid lying, it is a matter of him saying enough-is-enough to the NRA and its right-wing benefactors ALEC and the Koch Brothers.
Lurks Often
(5,455 posts)"Reid is trying to do what he's always doneput all these political calculations into a cauldron, and cook up something that's pleasing to as many members of his caucus as possible."
Despite the "break up" I notice that he still isn't above using the NRA's quotes on his website.
billh58
(6,635 posts)and devotion to the NRA is duly noted.
Lurks Often
(5,455 posts)It certainly isn't my fault you can't grasp that there are Democrats out there that own guns and that some prominent Democratic politicians are pro-gun and enjoy the support of the NRA.
billh58
(6,635 posts)truth: your support of the NRA is apparent and it is entirely your right to do so. We just happen to disagree, and I believe that the NRA is wholly-owned and funded by right-wing political organizations.
Take care now...
Lurks Often
(5,455 posts)that there ARE Democrats that receive support from the NRA.
hack89
(39,171 posts)he is the Democratic Speaker of the House, Nicholas Mattiello. He supports unions, gay marriage, the ACA, medical marijuana, strong environmental laws - and is endorsed by the NRA with an A+ rating.

(39,171 posts)good - we are making progress.
billh58
(6,635 posts)like it's a good thing. To many Democrats, an NRA endorsement is a sure vote for the other guy or girl in a Primary, or a no vote in the General.
hack89
(39,171 posts)the NRA will always back the incumbent regardless of party when it comes to gun rights. In many states it is not the political kiss of death you seem to think it is. Harry Reid comes immediately to mind. The 14 incumbent House Dems the NRA endorsed in 2010 also come to mind.
billh58
(6,635 posts)Harry fianlly saw the right-wing NRA for what it is: a prostituted mouthpiece for ALEC and the Koch Brothers.
hack89
(39,171 posts)lets not forget that it was Democratic Senators that stopped gun control legislation post Sandy Hook.
billh58
(6,635 posts)the NRA is a paragon of virtue and Democratic values.
hack89
(39,171 posts)regardless of their views on other issues. You are the one that wants to conflate supporting gun rights to a whole gamut of RW views. You simply can't accept that there are Dems that agree with you on every other Democratic value AND also support gun rights. I gave you a perfect example in Rhode Island.
You will never hesitate to smear anyone who disagrees with you as a right winger. Never.
