Macklemore, Ryan Lewis launch HIV fundraising effort, reveal Lewis' mother is HIV-positive
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis revealed today that Lewis’ mother has been HIV positive for 30 years.
Macklemore discussed it in a short YouTube video announcing that the Seattle musicians are supporting an Indiegogo campaign called the 30/30 Project.
Lewis wrote about his mother’s status on the Indiegogo page, which is seeking $100,000 in donations to build health clinics around the world, with the first one targeted for Malawi.
“A huge part of what's made me who I am is something I haven't talked about in interviews,” Ryan writes. “In 1984, my mom gave birth to my older sister, Teresa. Due to a complicated delivery, she needed a blood transfusion, and at that moment, my mom had HIV+ blood put into her body.”
By the time she was diagnosed, Ryan’s mother, Julie Lewis, had already given birth to Ryan and another sister. Both were fortunately born HIV-negative.
