We work hard. We skip lunch, eat dinner at our desks. Were at the office nights, weekends and holidays. We dont begrudge the hard work and long hours because we love what we do and take great pride in the magazines we help to produce (in whatever format). But there is a price beyond exhaustion and burnout: What about our loved ones? How many family dinners have we missed? How often do we get home too late to say goodnight?
Now Time Inc. has found yet another way to try to cut into our family time. It wants to slash, from 12 months to six, the amount of time a parent can choose to stay at home with a new child; the company is trying to reserve the right to cut that leave even more. Management, moreover, wants to completely eliminate the right under the contract for dads or moms to spend just a week at home with their spouse and newborn baby.
Time Inc. has made clear in its proposals that it considers any guaranteed right to leave or benefits too much of a burden. See the sidebar for other benefits the company considers expendable. The health care issue was awesome. More like that, I bet they wouldn't need to slash bennies.
