First GOP Governor Calls On Boehner To Extend Unemployment Benefits

Nevada's Brian Sandoval became the first Republican governor to publicly call on House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to revive unemployment insurance for more than 2 million Americans.

In a letter dated April 11, Sandoval and Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (D) endorsed the Senate-passed bill to extend long-term jobless benefits through the end of May, with retroactive compensation for those who lost it when the program expired on Dec. 28.

"These unemployment benefits are critical to the families in our states and we look forward to working with you," the governors wrote to Boehner and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Boehner has said the bill is "simply unworkable" and maintains that he won't bring it up in the House unless Democrats agree to attach jobs-related provisions. When asked what specific provisions would make the bill acceptable to him, he punted and said the White House should come up with an offer. Many House conservatives don't want to bring back the emergency jobless aid program, which was first enacted in 2008 amid economic free-fall.

He graduates in May. It has become at least twice as expensive since my daughter graduated 6 years ago.
I am poor but I find it incomprehensible how anyone unemployed and w/out (at least) unemployment insurance income
can afford to graduate their child.
I would imagine that quite a few parental suicides have ruined this supposed magic moment in life.
These intentionally cruel "leaders" should be prosecuted and the families paid (no amount would change things) because
in "our" oligarchic society money is the only thing that might immediately help.

9. What expenses are involved in graduation from high school these days?

Back in the 70s when I graduated, I think the only real expense was the cap & gown rental, which wasn't a burden. Parents usually threw parties for their graduates, but that was optional. We didn't have to pay for our diploma - it was public school, after all. Every time I read about school today I can't believe how it's changed.

The were optional expenses for my kids, like a class ring, or photos. Although we could afford it, we opted out of those. We never had a party for them, just took them out to dinner with immediate family; but I wouldn't call that a graduation expense.

I know in my town, there is a fund for families that are having a hard time, and any family that couldn't come up with the cap and gown rental would be accommodated.

out-of-sight costs of Prom (tux rental, etc.).
Of course senior pictures, announcements, cap and gown purchase, yearbook (now $100), all of the 2014 paraphernalia
(these except buying the cap & gown are optional but pushed heavily and priced exorbitantly).
Then there are pre-college testing fee's (ACT,SAT..)
To apply to a college there is an "application fee" the very cheapest one being $15.
Many of these are considered optional. Actually the culmination of 13 years of schooling is a very big event and (like good consumers)
the pressure to commemorate this event is huge and the children feel peer pressure (including ostracization at this age) to
conform to these (previously reasonably priced, now monopolized by Jostens through their school) "norms" that before extreme "wage stagnation/reversal" was much more affordable to our parents. Actually, I worked and paid for most of my graduation but teen unemployment /underemployment is currently staggering.
