Religious Oregon teens wear ‘Gay Is Not OK’ shirts to school to protest lack of ‘straight day’

By Eric W. Dolan
Tuesday, April 15, 2014 9:28 EDT

A small group of Oregon teens have provoked controversy by wearing shirts that read “Gay Is Not OK” and “Gay Day Is Not OK” to their high school.

“I just made it say ‘Gay Day is not OK,’ because I don’t believe that it’s OK,” Oregon City High School student Alex Borho told KPTV.

Borho and some of his friends wore the shirts to school during the National Day of Silence on April 11. The event is intended to bring attention to bullying and harassment targeting gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.

“I don’t have a big problem with gay people. It’s just when they start parading around the school about how we have a day of silence for gays, lesbians and transvestites,” Borho told KPTV. “We don’t have a straight day.”

Until there's true equality, EVERY day is 'straight day', you doofuses.

Nothing like deliberately trying to be a bully and harass people on the one day a year set aside to bring attention to bullying and harassment...

I agree, that would have been a great question. This looks like personal power derived from group strength through religion. I doubt few high-school students, not in agreement, have enough back-up to harass these religions minions. Maybe Ian Parker takes it for granted that minorities know better than to invite trouble from obvious sources. Or maybe he realizes he wouldn't even get a straight answer from these anti-gay crusaders who approached him with their story. They are so eager and bold to share their prejudice, but the one kid had his face blurred out, have to wonder if his father is prominent in the community or something.

As far as I'm concerned, this knucklehead can celebrate "straight day" in silence 365 days per year.

First, I think that my deliberate hyperbole was unmistakably clear.

Second, even if I were completely serious, "tolerance" is under no obligation to tolerate intolerance. A thing can not be required to accommodate its incompatible opposite, nor can it be required to be universal and comprehensive.

We don't have to be tolerant of the intolerant. In fact, we shouldn't.

RationalWiki explains it best.

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Tolerance

Paradox of Tolerance

"The paradox of tolerance" refers to the act of being intolerant of intolerance. It is a term generally used by opponents of pluralism to criticize advocates of toleration. The argument goes something like this:

  1. Tolerance means accepting others with differing views/lifestyles/shoe sizes

  2. Some people do not accept others with differing views/lifestyles/shoe sizes

  3. Those people are intolerant

  4. Not accepting intolerant people is itself intolerant

  5. Therefore, tolerance is impossible

This argument is total, unmitigated bullshit. Here's why: This assumes that totally uncritical tolerance is desirable. There's a distinction between being tolerant and blind moral relativism, and it is perfectly reasonable to say that it is not desirable to be perfectly tolerant of every single thing. Extremism rarely bodes well for anybody.

Karl Popper explains it quite well actually:

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them...We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.

They think they are so smart, but have so much to learn. Trying to teach this bunch must be disheartening and intimidating at the same time due to the overt show of power institutionalized religion is showing on an increasing level.

I think school administrators should let these fundie students drown under their own shame rather than turning them into right wing media martyrs via formal discipline, since their stupid message is going to be out-numbered by the tolerant students on the right side of history.
