Tonight: First Total Lunar Eclipse of 2014: The Complete Skywatcher's Guide

No enthusiastic skywatcher misses a total eclipse of the moon, and if weather permits tonight, neither should you.

The spectacle is often more beautiful and interesting than one would think. During the time that the moon is entering into and later emerging from out of the Earth's shadow, secondary phenomena may be overlooked. You can also watch the eclipse live on Space.com, courtesy of NASA, the Slooh community telescope and the Virtual Telescope Project.

Observers that know what to look for have a better chance of seeing the stunning eclipse, weather permitting. This first total lunar eclipse of 2014 is set to begin tonight (April 14) into the wee hours of Tuesday morning (April 15). The lunar eclipse is set to begin at about 2 a.m. EDT (0600 GMT), and it should last about 3.5 hours. The eclipse should be visible, weather permitting, through most of North America and part of South America. [Total Lunar Eclipse of April 15: Visibility Maps (Gallery)]

.. I found this..

"There is some confusion as to when you should start watching the total lunar eclipse – known as a blood red moon – that is listed as occurring on April 15, 2014. Actually, in most places where it will be visible, you should start watching on April 14 – that’s Monday evening!

The confusion around the timing is because the official times listed for the eclipse are based on Eastern Daylight Time – even though the best viewing of the eclipse will be west of that time zone. So – officially – the eclipse’s start time is just before 1 a.m. EDT on April 15. Got that, New Yorkers? (Actually, NYC and the Eastern time zone as a whole is not the greatest spot to be trying to watch the eclipse; it is right on the eastern edge of the viewing area.)

But if you are watching in Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Honolulu, etc, the eclipse starts before midnight on what is still Monday evening, April 14. To be clear: For L.A., and other points in the Pacific time zone, the eclipse will begin and reach totality just at the stroke of midnight on Monday night, and then continue into the wee hours of Tuesday morning!"

So thanks for the reminder and getting me in gear.. my neighbor on the 3rd floor came knocking at my door and said it was On! Or I might have missed it 'cause I was having a late supper.

Saw the Red.. did not look like the Moon at certain points.

"The Killing Moon"

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

In starlit nights I saw you
So cruelly you kissed me
Your lips a magic world
Your sky all hung with jewels
The killing moon
Will come too soon

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

Under blue moon I saw you
So soon you'll take me
Up in your arms
Too late to beg you or cancel it
Though I know it must be the killing time
Unwillingly mine

Fate
Up against your will
Through the thick and thin
He will wait until
You give yourself to him

A bit chilly out, but completely clear sky. Mars is very bright, above and to the right.

If I had a halfway decent camera, I'd snap some pictures.

it makes sense. (You may already know this, but it's fun for people who haven't visualized it)...Mars is also right now basically right behind the Earth, vis a vis the sun, in its orbit.

Which is why it's so bright, and closer to us than it usually is. (Apparently it was at full opposition on the 8th, but it's still pretty close)
