New Orleans police officer resigns after remarks on Trayvon (‘Act Like a Thug, Die Like One’)

New Orleans -- Officer Jason Giroir has resigned from the New Orleans Police Department.

Chief Ronal Serpas suspended Giroir Monday for online posts he made on a story about Trayvon Martin. A neighborhood watch member killed the unarmed Florida teen after an apparent scuffle.

Giroir’s attorney, Eric Hessler, released this statement late Tuesday afternoon: “He voluntarily resigned from the New Orleans Police Department and he expressed his regrets for the fallout caused by his statements and he did not intend to bring any embarrassment to his profession, the police department and certainly did not mean to offend the community."

NOPD confirmed Giroir’s resignation in a news release, and said it took place after the officer was notified of further disciplinary action by the department. “Public Integrity Bureau Chief Arlinda Westbrook notified Jason Giroir that allegations of misconduct against him had been sustained, and that Superintendent Ronal Serpas was calling for a Pre-termination hearing regarding Giroir’s departmental violations as per existing policies and procedures,” reads the statement. "Upon learning this, Giroir submitted his resignation to the NOPD."

the posts themselves, only the fallout they caused and the embarrassment to law enforcement. When he made the offensive posts about Trayton, he meant what he said in them.

I'm glad NOPD took action against Giroir and that he resigned.

all know, mastering the art of the non-apology is a requirement for politicians - well, for republican politicians, anyway.

I guess it's a step up from murdering African Americans for the crime of standing on a bridge, but this little outburst didn't do anything to help the already-bad reputation of the NOPD. At least they fired him (ok, prepared to fire him while giving him the chance to resign).

he would probably have a different opinion of Trayvon if he had been recruited to LSU on a football scholarship.
