Now that support and security updates for Windows XP are no longer available, its important that you take steps to protect the personal information on your home PC. Explore your options and find out what you can do today.
Received this message form Microsoft today regarding XP operating systems. Why did I get it? I have no idea, I don't have XP, I have a PC with Vista that I should have upgraded when I could still get Windows 7, but OH well.
But "Were here to help" You kill support and then say you are there to help?

One place I worked at had this tracking software so that you could check the status of the items on the production line.
Across the bottom of the screen it listed what the purpose of the function keys was.
It said "For Help, Press F1"
When you pressed F1, up popped a screen saying "There is no help for this subject"
The stuporvisor never could understand why I thought that was hilarious.

(102,360 posts)worldwide that are dependent on Winxp and for whom, Microsoft WILL continue to support (as reported in multiple articles the past several months), but the public? Hell no.

(34,825 posts)it's not coming free of charge.

(102,360 posts)Given the support is being paid for, MS could damn well provide it to the public as well--even for a reasonable charge.
frylock
(34,825 posts)it was a good run, but the public needs to move on and upgrade to a newer OS.

(102,360 posts)WHICH, is precisely why so many governments are likewise sticking with winxp (and paying big tax $$ to maintain it).
For your information, my primary computer is win7. (Win 8 is known throughout the tech world as the dud it truly is and won't be on any machine of mine)...
Cut the condescension. I don't deserve it.

(102,360 posts)and I'm tired of those who assume everyone else, including those who complain re: MS is a Luddite. If I misread your intent, my apologies.

(28,552 posts)... which is why I turned them off 2 years before I stopped using XP.
And I had no issues, it worked fine until I got a new computer with W7 (which I really like).
So, I get a chuckle out of folks who think the day updates stop coming they will be immediately subsumed by Borg malware. Not if they have a router/gateway and firewall and don't click every stupid unknown link and open every dubious document. If you are determined to get an infected computer I'm sure you can.

(45,358 posts)Microsoft doesn't support BASIC on my ALTAIR either, fucking assholes.
MS supported XP for 12 freaking years! And people are STILL whining?
7 is a great OS and 8.11 (technically "Windows 8.1 'Update') is stable and has restored functionality back to the desktop environment. RIP, XP. Time to move on...

(45,358 posts)If they had ever used Windows 8 and XP they would know the desktops (where work is done) are exactly the same.
People will bash Microsoft until the end of time. It's a natural law.

(3,109 posts)Corporate users hate win 8. nobody has a touch screen, and it's horrid to support (what I do for a living). The only way to make it usable for most keyboard and mouse users is to install a front end like Classic Shell.

(45,358 posts)Nobody in our office hates Windows 8. Only haters do that.
Windows 8 works with a mouse just like all previous OS's (95, 98, NT, XP, Vista, Win7). No touch screen needed. You would know that if you really are in tech support.
Mac people think this is a gotcha because the commercials show windows 8 being used with a touch screen. A touch screen is nothing more than using your finger as a mouse.
I suggest you use it once and report back after you know how it works.

(3,109 posts)I use it on my home system and my work laptop. But for users who don't have touch screens the metro interface gets in the way.
The University I work for has over 10,000 systems operational, we are sticking with Win 7 at least until win9 comes out. I have been doing IT tech support for 33 years since 1981. Of all the interfaces microsoft has foisted on it;s users, Metro is by far the worst (unless you are using a phone or tablet). Under the hood 8 is fine.
