i periodically go around and check to see who's turned 18 recently. if they have, i ask if they've registered to vote and encourage them to do so, telling them where they can go if they haven't done so. they're mostly young women, a few of them who came to the US as children.
i'm not allowed to talk to them about politics, but i explain to them why it's important to vote. they're all preparing for college, many wanting to study nursing or teaching. i tell them that voting can affect the cost of college, the fields they want to go into, the taxes they pay. i feel i have a responsibility to do this and need to start expanding my efforts to the other young adults at work.
their voices need to, and deserve to be, heard. i just hope they listen to me.

(38,958 posts)I took my nieces to lunch and to register to vote. I know one is a liberal the other I believe to be conservative like her family, but they are at least registered.

(14,449 posts)The conservative one after a few lunches and your nice discussions might even change to at least leaning liberal. I know that sometimes kids have these outrageous thoughts about politics especially conservatives, but you seem to me a person who could gently guide towards liberal or at least have her think about things. Your a great relative for sure.

(24,146 posts)registering to vote was one of the first things i did when i was 18.
the league of women voters goes to the high schools to register those who are old enough and that's how some of them got on the rolls.
