Walmart this month will begin selling discounted organic food from Wild Oats, the natural foods company that has been struggling to make a comeback since 2007, the retailers announced Wednesday.
... "We are removing the premium associated with organic groceries," Jack Sinclair, executive vice president of grocery for Walmart, said on a call with reporters Wednesday morning. "They will be able to buy organic products at nonorganic prices."
Customers can still find some Wild Oats products in other, smaller retailers, but at higher prices. The discounts are exclusive to Walmart; for example, a 6-ounce can of Wild Oats organic tomato paste will sell at Walmart for 58 cents, while the competing organic brand sells for 98 cents. Some Wild Oats products will be half the cost of other leading organic brands.
... The deal with Walmart also marks a comeback for Wild Oats, a pioneer in the organics grocery business and at one time the nation's second-largest organic and natural foods purveyor. The Colorado-based chain sold its stores to Whole Foods in 2007 in a $565 million deal. While the Wild Oats brand remained intact, without its own stores, the company struggled to reintroduce its products into a much more crowded organics marketplace.

(62,276 posts)If local farmers have it and it's decent quality (not necessarily the best stuff) you can find farmers market tomatoes or whatever other vegetables sold right on their shelves. It really surprised me to learn this. The farmers market in my home town is open once a week. Wal-Mart sells the same tomatoes by the same farmers daily...
