The Really Bad Dialogue in Zimmerman's Ridiculous Account

Trayvon: You got a problem?

George (Hesitant, retreating cautiously): No.

Trayvon: Well, you do now! (Trayvon punches George in nose)

OK. Like, for serious? For real, yo? That's the best dialogue this dude could come up with for this pivotal moment in his story? You got a problem? Well, you do now! Spladow!! I mean, I'm not expecting Tarantino circa the breakfast scene in Reservoir Dogs, but really?

This is how you know it's bullshit. This is why the lead homicide investigator thought it was bullshit and recommended manslaughter charges. This is laughable dialogue. This is what people who don't know anybody like Trayvon Martin think that people like Trayvon Martin talk like. This is one stop away from inserting an "I axed you a question" into it to make you get "axe" instead of ask.

I grew up in New York City in the 80's and 90's. I've seen shit kick off more times than I like to count. It never happens with supposedly witty back-and-forth. Nobody revved up on adrenalin talks this way. There is no dialogue. It's all incoherent yelling and repetition and shit just goes south. This, though also clearly false, would have been more believable:

Trayvon: Fuckin' problem? Problem?

George (Hesitant, retreating cautiously): What motherfu--...whafuck.

Trayvon (louder, yelling now): Fuckin' problem? Fuckin' PROBLEM? (Trayvon punches George in nose)

Zimmerman's is way too clean. His little piece of really very bad writing is key evidence for me that Zimmerman's version is made up. Shit just don't kick off like that. In fact, the girlfriend's version is much more believable:

Trayvon: Yo, why you following me?

George: What're you doing here? (Skuffling sounds heard)

Now THAT's how shit kicks off: in confusion and fucking suddenly. It's never clean back and forth leading to a punch. I've never seen it.

each passing day. More than likely, he had his gun out, Martin continued to walk, and Z grabbed his shoulder to "detain" him. If Martin threw off Z's arm, that could have been the start of the altercation. Perhaps the bullet was fired right then. But all of this embellished context, complete with confrontation that sounds right out of a bad script, is bogus. Z needs to be interviewed multiple times to get discrepancies -- a clear sign that the story is unfolding as he tells it.

The thing provided is a stab at cheap 'hard-boiled' fiction. It is not the sort of thing that actually happens. Witty dialogue is a movie convention, not a fact of life. I have been the one starting it off on several occasions as an adult and never, in an instance where I actually struck, did I say anything first, let alone something witty or cutting. Your throat kind of closes up, you are trembling under your skin, you just do it, to get it over with, get past it. Only when you know there is no real risk do you say anything.

Further, the account of the fight is bullshit. A bean-pole does not knock a fireplug down with a single punch to the nose. A blow to the center of the face delivered hard enough to knock a 250 lb man to the ground would break much more than the nose ( including bones in the hand delivering the blow ), and render the person who received it insensible for some while. Put bluntly, if afterwards someone pounded his head on the sidewalk for a minute, he would not likely have been aware that was happening. And of course, if he had had his head pounded back onto pavement for a minute or so, he would have taken obvious damage and serious injury, and required medical intervention.

The story as presented is clearly a fiction crafted to accord, so far as the crafter is capable of managing, with what he thinks will set him on the right side of the law and the police.

The notion that a person is knocked down that way doesn't comport with any fight I've ever seen or been in, and there have been a few. I also agree with your excellent description of the throat constricting; it's as if there's a biological inverse relation between fighting and talking.

Knock-down blows are for professionals, of anyone.

A guy who I outweighed by maybe thirty pounds once hit me square on a cheek-bone with a punch thrown on the run, he covered a good twenty feet to close and had all his moving mass behind it, and while it did make things flash pale blue for an instant, it did not come close to moving me. He obviously expected it to drop me, and the way his face changed from triumph to dismay when I did not even rock back is one of my fonder memories. I put him to the ground immediately, but not with a punch; I grabbed him by the shoulders, threw him down, and kicked him. I have never gone into a fight with the idea of punching someone in the face to make them fall down. You want to break his balance and keep him off balance, get him to the ground while you keep your feet.

the damage to his hand would have been found during the autopsy. (There was an autopsy, wasn't there?) Also, if he grabbed Zimmerman's head and pounded it on the ground, he'd probably have skin flakes from Zimmerman's scalp under his nails.

It's been transferred to the state's attorney's office, and can't be made public until the investigation is concluded. The medical examiner's report will likely land Mr. Zimmerman at a defendant's table.

And how have they been altered? From the video and the police report, it is obvious the police made shit up. Lots of people belong in jail over this, not just Zimmerman.

I write screenplays and that is horrible dialogue. Not only does it sound contrived, it doesn't go with the character. But, there is so much embellishment in his story that the truth is hidden.
