FDNY and NYPD throw punches in benches-clearing brawl during charity hockey game

They may be "New York's Finest" and "New York's Bravest," but they won't be competing for "New York's Classiest" after what happened on Sunday, when police and firefighters brawled at a charity hockey match.

The fight set Twitter, YouTube and Instagram aflame with photos and videos of the violence.

The teams were tied, 3-3, in the second period when the benches-clearing brawl erupted. NYPD eventually won, 8-5, breaking FDNY's five-year winning streak.

But, when a fight erupts in the NBA, everyone is quick to call the players thugs and engage in shaming them.

There have been fights, but not all that many. Second, there is a clear divider between fan and athlete in hockey, not so in basketball. Overall, hockey is a much more brutal sport than basketball. No way to have the level of violence that there is in hockey without fights. There are many reasons on top of that.

"Guess what? I went to the fights last night and a hockey game broke out".

Fighting in hockey is common, the NHL will penalize those involved or sanction the whole team, so I can see where you're coming from.
Maybe all the players involved should've been fined and reprimanded.

Take it from me when I say there's always been an intense rivalry between cops and firefighters.

This does remind me of one of the opening scenes in The Departed (which, granted, is set in Boston).

After all, the NYPD has a lot more experience in beating people to death with sticks.
