Report: Colbert frontrunner to replace Letterman

By Doug Saffir / Boston.com Staff / April 4, 2014

In Twitter’s frantic rush to offer up a replacement for David Letterman on CBS’s “The Late Show,” only some may have hit the nail on the head.

Apparently Stephen Colbert is in the running and has an early lead, according to a report from Mashable.

The story said that no “formal” conversation has taken place, but that Colbert is “CBS’ top choice to replace the retiring David Letterman, and has indicated that he’s willing to take over.”

Of course, being the early favorite doesn't mean anything is set in stone. There are surely plenty of hurdles to handle and a lot can happen between now and Letterman’s 2015 retirement. But the timing for Colbert to step in seems pretty perfect, the report added.

From Mashable:

Colbert's contract to host The Colbert Report on Comedy Central runs through the end of 2014, which would free him up in time to move over to CBS when Letterman ends his 33-year run in late-night TV. Letterman left the exact date of his departure vague while announcing his retirement plans on Thursday.

"We don't have the timing of this precisely down; it will be at least a year or so," Letterman said on Thursday's episode of the Late Show. "But at some time in the not-too-distant future ? 2015, for the love of God."

the second he says something incorrect. He should stay beside Jon Stewart and play the cards he already has.

Conan should get the gig -- he's the only one who has a chance against Jimmy Kimmel.

He's sharp, articulate, humorous & never mean.

I love him, so I'm thrilled to think CBS is considering him.

But Colbert's a comedian that's itching to prove he's more than a character.

He's a very funny man and great interviewer. I have no question that he can make it in a non-political setting, because politics aren't really Colbert's first love, comedy is. I do hope if he gets the show, he brings his character back from time to time though, maybe in skits on the show.
