A grand jury is now hearing testimony in the federal criminal probe into the George Washington Bridge lane-closings scandal, according to Anthony Iacullo, the lawyer for Gov. Chris Christies spokesman, Michael Drewniak, who added that Drewniak appeared before the grand jurors today and testified as a witness.
Legal experts say the hearing of grand-jury testimony is an important development that means U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman has accumulated enough evidence to move past a preliminary inquiry into the controversial lane closings and into a grand jury investigation of them.
The fact that there is an active grand-jury investigation does mean that the government is taking the inquiry seriously enough to bring witnesses before the grand jury, said Joseph Hayden, a prominent defense lawyer and former state prosecutor, but it does not mean any decision has been made as to whether or not there has been a federal offense or whether there is a provable case.
Its indicative that the investigation is ramping up, he added.
Iacullo stressed that Drewniak is a witness in Fishmans investigation,

(2,419 posts)have been sent to Bridget Kelly and David Wildstein. I'd guess that "subject" letters have been sent to Guadagno, Constable, Comella, O'Dowd, McKenna and Samson. They've all gone silent in the last couple of weeks. I'd bet they have one with Christie's name on it typed up. Any of those people are potential targets if the grand jury process develops evidence implicating them. There's no taking the 5th for witnesses here. I heard a "rumor" that Wildstein has cut a deal. I don't know that I believe it because the person I heard it from is not exactly objective here-but it would make sense knowing now that testimony has started to be taken.

(2,419 posts)that Dawn Zimmer has taken the ride to Newark or that Bridget Kelly was spotted entering the Federal Court House we'll know the action has really heated up. It shouldn't be long now.
