Mitt Romney's $12 million La Jolla teardown has long been a subject of mockery from his opponents this election cycle, but a Politico story revealing the extent of its luxury -- a car elevator, its own lobbyist -- is again thrusting the story into the news. Romney could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he had just checked in with recent endorser Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) first.
Back in August when the news of the house first broke, McCarthy warned that it would be trouble, telling a forum audience that quadrupling the size of Romney's already swanky beach estate was a disastrous political move.
"He needs to stop staying in hotels and start staying with volunteers at every campaign stop," McCarthy said at the time. "His job should be to take out the trash every day, and if that bag breaks, he needs to clean it up."

Hobnobbing with world powers

But to get elected I'll turn the tables
Where would you buy your staples
If I hadn't worked at Bain
Who'd bust unions with efficiency
Reducing cost and deficiency
For a capital gain
Would I look like a robber baron
In this Armani suit I'm wearin'
If I hadn't worked at Bain
I'm looking forward to the general
When my old politics become ephemeral
And stop causin' so much pain
but I'll still keep you guessin' with
Which entitlements I'ld be messin' with
If I I hadn't worked at Bain

(21,925 posts)Staying with volunteer staffers instead of expensive hotels, delaying modifications to his estate, even practicing taking out the trash won't change his nature. No amount of artifice and no amount of coaching can change Romney. He's not just a fantastically wealthy man. He's someone who's never learned to appreciate hard times and who can't understand what it's like to go to bed hungry or seriously ill or not knowing where the rent money will come from. His problem is not that he's rich. There have been very wealthy Presidents who have expressed compassion. His problem is that he can't relate to the 99%. That's a very serious flaw for a professional politician.

In the wake of the revelation that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney plans to add a car elevator to his La Jolla estate, and his campaigns subsequent defense of said elevator, Buzzfeed has been buzz-fed some oppo research that shows Romney, as Governor, once vetoed a bill that would have, among other things, funded a $40,000 upgrade to make elevators compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
From Buzzfeed:
On June 26, 2006 Romney vetoed an improvement project with the price tag of $40,000 with his line item veto. The project would have allocated the money to Woburn Development Authority for improvements to an elevator to meet the standards set in the ADA.
Also on that day Romney vetoed an additional $25,000 to the Braintree, Massachusetts Council on Aging. The money was again proposed to meet improvements with the ADA.
I know what youre thinking, but really, with all the energy they save getting those great parking spaces, cant these people take the stairs for a change?
