UPS fires 250 employees for staging a 90-minute protest to defend co-worker

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ups-fires-250-employees-staging-143805147.html

UPS is firing 250 Queens, N.Y., drivers for walking off the job during a 90-minute protest in February.

The company dismissed 20 of the workers after their shifts Monday and issued notices of termination to another 230 employees, notifying them that they will be fired once the company has trained their replacements, UPS spokesman Steve Gaut told Business Insider.

The workers were protesting the dismissal of longtime employee and union activist Jairo Reyes, who was fired over an hours dispute, according to Gaut. The New York Daily News first reported on the firings.

UPS Another fine American Corporation doing all it can to help their employees reach the NEW American dream of unemployment line to find benefits being cut. Families relaying on food stamps to feed a family of 4 for the month for the grand sum of $50 a month and let's remember when those employees are homeless and still trying to provide for their families we will have them arrested for child abuse and feed that ever profitable system the FOR PROFIT PRISON SYSTEM!!!

And remember God Bless America!

It's been many moons since I did labor law, but IIRC, section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act protects concerted action by employees, even if they're not in a union and even if the action isn't aimed at unionizing, but at some other aspect of the conditions of employment.

As against that, I'd have to guess that UPS management checked with their lawyers first. There's probably some loophole or exception that they believe they can rely on.

I do receive shipments from others via UPS when I don't get to choose, but I never choose them and all of my many shipments going out per week are not through them. They are a horrible company in my humble opinion.
