Politico's Reid Epstein dug up the construction plans for Mitt Romney's La Jolla, CA mansion project (a favorite punching bag for Democrats) and found a project packed with goodies not found on the average middle class home.
At Mitt Romneys proposed California beach house, the cars will have their own separate elevator.
Theres also a planned outdoor shower and a 3,600-square foot basement a room with more floor space than the existing homes entire living quarters.
Epstein also reports the project has "its own lobbyist, hired by Romney to push the plan through the approval process."

(9,983 posts)Drive-on lifts are sold as ways to increase the capacity of a gararge, and they are not terribly expensive. A 1-floor elevator could be as simple as ordering a drive-on lift in "extra tall". I know a collector who has an underground "vault" for his rarer exotics - like the oldest Stutz Bearcat in existence.
And I'm with you on his taste in cars as well - car buffs know their cars like their kid's Little Leauge stats. If he did'nt rattle off the stats on Ann's Caddies without even thinking - say "A pearl white '04 Escalade with the tow package, for the horse trailer", or keep an old Rambler - maybe an Ambassador convertible? for memory's sake - he's just another rich dick throwing money around to impress his peers.

(904 posts)I've never cared about how many houses/cars Romney has.
I'm more concerned with his plans for SS, public education etc. etc.
But with that being said, he's DEFINITELY a 1 percenter.

(70,508 posts)After all how can he and Ann live in this "fixer upper" without suffering.
BTW from having helped in some campaigns WTF is wrong w/ Romney to be pushing this
project while running for President? The man has a political "tin ear." Adding on to
this classic beauty of a Southern California Beach Front Mediterranean Style home when
so many people are hurting? The commercials would write themselves. Cue the ZZ top
music or that sound track from Ferris Bueller
BTW An outdoor shower to wash the sand off when coming back from the beach is fine but
car elevators? For the love of God he can rent a car storage place in San Diego that will
bring whatever car he wants to his house almost 24/7. How many jobs did he send overseas
to afford all this stuff?

(9,983 posts)About the price of a used Camry, for a simple one like this
A storage lift is often cheaper than building more square footage - $2 grand for this one
How much is the "teardown" house worth? That's the cryin' shame here.
Botany
(70,508 posts)Somehow I think a bonded auto storage company might be cheaper and better.
To ruin a classic home like that and to spend millions as he is running for President
shows just how out of touch Mitt really is ..... just my thoughts.
Besides the lifts might not be that much but the construction costs will be steep ...
I don't think Mitt's neighbors would be happy either.

(9,983 posts)Putting a 50' x 72' (3600 sq ft, per the o.p) fucking barn/warehouse on a small waterfront lot like this is pretty stupid, and absolutely hateful to the neighbors. Given Mitt's swinish behavior at the waterfront property he owns in NH (on Lake Winnipesaukee), I'm not surprised. The elevator(s) can be a way to park 9 cars in 3 spots, inconspicuously - but why do you need to park so many cars at a single - family residence? In an area where space is at a huge premium, this just isn't smart, or considerate. The real hue and cry ought to focus on the number of bedrooms and residents at that address.
My sister is an architecht, who does some high-end second / retirement homes. What she tells me is that folks start out wanting a design for conditions that rarely exist - big dinner parties, and all the family coming to visit at once! So you end up with a huge place that 2 or 3 people rattle around in. Or you talk to your clients a while, and work out a solution that realistically accomidates their needs.
In this case, I'd look for another property close by, so folks could shuttle by golf cart, bycicle or foot, from the "Bunkhouse / carbarn" to the "beach house" - Gives everybody more privacy, at a much lower cost, and impact to the neighborhood.
Romney was quoted as saying that he needed the extra space when the grandkids
come to stay which might be a few times a year .... I lived in La Jolla for a little bit
and the place is thick w/ hotels (some world class) and rental homes so the reason
that they say they would be cramped is bullshit.
San Diego has a number of high end car storage places that are bonded and secure
and with all the accountants and lawyers Romney has he might be able to write off
some of the expenses.
And finally to screw up a classic Mediterranean SoCal beautiful beach front home
(if designed right the homes can take advantage of the daytime onshore breeze
and night time offshore breeze to maintain the homes climate) for pure vanity but
if you lived the life of Mitt you might very well be out of touch with the real world
too.

Mr. Romney, I want you out of state billionaires, (hey McCain are you reading this too?) to pay at least 10% of the value of your expensive beach properties in property taxes to help out this state you are so cavalierly enjoying the best of and yet not paying your share for its upkeep.

In the wake of the revelation that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney plans to add a car elevator to his La Jolla estate, and his campaigns subsequent defense of said elevator, Buzzfeed has been buzz-fed some oppo research that shows Romney, as Governor, once vetoed a bill that would have, among other things, funded a $40,000 upgrade to make elevators compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
From Buzzfeed:
On June 26, 2006 Romney vetoed an improvement project with the price tag of $40,000 with his line item veto. The project would have allocated the money to Woburn Development Authority for improvements to an elevator to meet the standards set in the ADA.
Also on that day Romney vetoed an additional $25,000 to the Braintree, Massachusetts Council on Aging. The money was again proposed to meet improvements with the ADA.
I know what youre thinking, but really, with all the energy they save getting those great parking spaces, cant these people take the stairs for a change?
