I was in the San Diego area in January right after the new year and had a strange encounter with a 1%'er.
My wife and I were at the Oceanside Marina having lunch at restaurant. You could see the marina from our table and I watched this nearly probably $500,000 boat dock at its parking dock. An older couple got out with their little dog and went to the front of the restaurant area. Because there were some small houseboats I wanted to take photos of I decided to go around back after we finished lunch. I had seen them last year and wanted a couple more pictures.
As I was walking toward the back of this yacht to get a better angle of a boat I was interested in, this old guy was standing by his boat. I asked him how much fuel it took to run it. He told me it burned 32 gallons and hour on a one way 3 hour trip from San Diego.
As I went to the back of the dock he asked me if I was the owner of the Prius that had a "turn off Fox" sticker on the back of my car. When I said yes he said, "You don't like the idea of free speech in this country do you?" I said, "Well I support free speech but I not support telling lies all the time and distorting the facts". He then said, "I suppose you like Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews." And I replied, "Yes as a matter of fact I do like them and I like Keith Olberman even more". He then got huffy and yelled at me, "You are nothing but a damned communist". I told I his was not a communist as I walked back toward the restaurant. As he got on his boat he was yelling at me "Get away from my boat! Get away from my boat!" That last thing I said was "I am a Vietnam vet I fought for your right to feel that way". I am not sure he heard me.
Now I did not challenge this guy. Nor did I get nasty back. But this encounter shows you how hateful we are becoming and we are becoming more armed every day.
We are now a toxic nation full of hate and vitriol spurred on by 24//7 by thousands of hours of super heated hate radio. And I remember Lincoln's words "A nation divided cannot stand". The latest controversy over the Tayvon Martin cold blooded murder illustrates how we are descending into a maelstrom.

I can only change myself. It feels really good to do that, to make those efforts.

The world will know he was here. You'll be able to hear it in the choked breaths of tomorrows children.

(5,198 posts)toxic conditioning has created the illusion that we ARE our opinions. This happens with fear, with a closed heart. When the heart is open we are all brothers and sisters, we relax, we are able to laugh at ourselves and our differences. How do we get from here to there? Is it possible?
