Ivy League Schools, as well as most other hard to enter colleges and universities set quotas for various high schools, varying by some set of factors the university comes up with to promote a diverse student body. Sometimes, the school might be blocked, with no students being offered a slot, other times a school might accept one, two, or three students from a school.

Some of the kids at my daughter's high school would apply to a dozen colleges just so they could get acceptance letters from as many as they could... knowing that they had NO intention of going to that school. What that did was cut off dozens of other classmates from being receiving an acceptance letter.

While what the teen did was admirable, it also jammed a lot of other students in his class, preventing 7 other kids from entering an Ivy school that year.
