they're saying things like:
It's closer to land; the weather is much better; the water is much calmer; the currents tend to make stuff stay in one area...
All that makes me think of that old story, the one where the guy is looking for his keys under the streetlight. Someone walks up and asks where he lost them and he said "over there" indicating a place some distance from the light. So the person then asked "Why are you looking here then". The first guy then answered "cause the light is much better here."
