Pedophile Catholic Priest Pleads Guilty: Diocese Knew About Me And Did Nothing
A defrocked Catholic priest about to begin trial on molestation charges in Philadelphia abruptly changed his plea to "guilty" on Friday. As part of his confession, Father Edward Avery declared that his diocese had been aware of his crimes, but had allowed him to keep his job.
In a statement of facts read as part of the guilty plea, Assistant District Attorney Patrick Blessington said, Avery was aided in his efforts to remain in ministry with unsupervised access to parish children and altar servers and others in the Archdiocese. Defendant Lynn and other Archdiocese officials acted in concert with Avery with a common purpose to conceal Averys known acts of sexual abuse of a minor, so that Avery could remain in ministry without the knowledge of parishioners whose children would be exposed to a man that defendant Lynn and others in the Archdiocese knew presented a danger to children.
The trial of Monsignor William Lynn, who allegedly hid Avery's crimes, began today.
It was his job to investigate allegations of sexual abuse, but Coelho says Lynn paid lip service to the protection of children while protecting the priests now charged with (and in at least one case admitting to) abusing children. Coelho told jurors that Lynn, with a secret file of the complaints, was the keeper of the secrets. And he kept parishoners in the dark, she said, because there was a concerted effort to protect the church from scandal even if it endangered additional children.

(535 posts)defensive position.
Can we predict a domino effect from this in that area? Or are all the higher-ups that knew already gone from their positions, dead, or otherwise unreachable?

(23,973 posts)I'm sorry, but it is true.
Not all Catholics are corrupt, but as long as they keep these evil child molesting enablers in power with donations nothing will change.
Not One Dime.
The Philly diocese will cut Lynn loose and throw him to the wolves in order to ameliorate their losses. Their potential liability is enormous.
It's already started.

(23,973 posts)How many hungry people fed wipes out the sexual abuse of thousands of children, the cover-up of those crimes, and the further unwillingness of the RCC to admit guilt in the matter?
Why do they continue to fight in the face of overwhelming evidence of criminal conspiracy, besides monetary reasons, that is?
If the RCC cannot, or more to the point, will not get their house in order, it will be a very expensive proposition going forward.
They will be forced to go to their parishioners for the funds to bail them out.
How long will that be tolerated before the laity rebels against the church hierarchy, who have been the enablers all these years?

(21,086 posts)I just cannot understand how anyone, Catholic or otherwise, can financially support this church. And I cannot understand where the 'pew' outrage is. Or should I say isn't.
This church has a culture of corruption and the very fact that it stems from the top and filters into the lives of innocent children and youth is more than enuf' to keep me away. If you haven't read more about what the church's response has been in many, many locations, you're in for an eye opener.

(1,734 posts)Do the "good ones" donate to the collection plate? Where do you think that money goes?
Once you find out that your religion has been systematically raping children, covering it up for decades, and spending church money on lawsuits and settlements, why would you continue to support it or attend mass?
What can you learn from people who cover up child rape? The fucking Pope was one of the worst enablers of the rapists. Afterward, he was elevated to the faith's highest position. This is the hierarchy of the faith you choose.
Your choice. Remember that: you choose to support the church.
