According to a tally by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, photos, videos and stories about Michelle Obama's visit to China garnered more than 1 billion page views.

Yes, that's billion with a B.

It's probably not too far-fetched of a notion, according to Cheng Li, director of the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution.

one might expect that it's popular with at least, say 50 or 100 million people? Maybe women--who admittedly represent a minority in China.

The local paper gives this retired guy space to write a weekly rant which he often uses to complain about the president and his family for wasting taxpayer money using racist code words. The paper says his columns are "amusing". There are no alternative opinions published to offset his ignorance. Many rural communities are awash in this racist, anti-democratic garbage. So much of the rural news media has been taken over by right wing corporate interests. It makes it so easy for the Koch brothers and other corporate interests to manipulate people who have no experience with people of color or people of differing religious backgrounds. For most of these folks their biggest adventure is going to Myrtle Beach or Florida. It explains a lot about Florida when so many of these people end up retiring to the Florida trailer parks.

Most of these people can see no reason why a trip by the First Family promoting good will is important. They easily buy into the idea that this is an outrageous waste of money. The idea of "those people's" travel being paid for by the American taxpayers fits nicely into the racist memes the GOP has run with since the inception of the Southern strategy.

Here is the link to his latest screed complaining about Mrs. Obama's vacation, as he calls it. The level of ignorance is appalling.

The latest census data show our local population continues to decrease. All the children who can, get out, as there is nothing here for them. No culture, no jobs, poor education prospects and no future because the people who get elected answer to people like that old man who are all stuck in the racist, ignorant past. What new company would move here when they see that kind of garbage in the newspaper? Just Walmart, which destroys the last few remaining local businesses.

It is refreshing to see the national and international positive responses to Michele Obama and her family doing such a great job spreading diplomacy and good will. Thanks for the link, never would know how wonderful this was received otherwise.
