(269,144 posts)is much better - additionally the new site is closer to Australia which is very good news for all.

(9,766 posts)Thanks for the info. I saw the video of the seas in that area yesterday...amazing.

(8,377 posts)First, I said all along that they shoulde be correlating the arc of the hourly pings rather than looking only at the last one. That seems to be what they finally did to get to this new target zone. Why does that take 2 weeks? That seemed like a no-brainer to me.
But here's the thing that doesn't make sense with the Australian press conference. Over and over, they said that the main change is that they now believe the plane was flying much faster and therefore burned more fuel. And the new target zone is 900 miles shorter than the old flight. That is a huge difference. I don't see how the fuel consumption related to speed would make that much difference. Altitude could make that difference, but not speed. And if it was going faster and crashed 900 miles earlier, that means it crashed 2 hours sooner than previously thought. In that case, how sis those last two pings get through?
It does seem that they may be finding debris here, so I hope this is the right location finally. But this gives me practically no confidence in the basic deductive abilities of those working this investigation. My guess is that there are some smart people behind the scenes and those two goofs that held the press conference didn't have a clue.

(269,144 posts)People are using mathematical models and they recalculated based on a different estimate of the aircraft's speed and therefore when would the plane run out of fuel.

(8,377 posts)then that must have happened 2 hours earlier than previously thought. How could the last 2 pings get through if the plane had already crashed?
You said it made sense but you didn't explain why it made sense. Please explain where my reasoning is wrong. It can fly faster and crash at a shorter distance and still stay in the air the same amount of time.
