(41,694 posts)I lived in Round Rock, a suburb of Austin, during the lead up to and the start of the war in Iraq. My neighborhood had many "support our troops" bumper stickers and yard signs. I had the only "No war for Oil" yard sign and several similar bumper stickers on my truck. The first yard sign was stolen in 1 day. I replaced it immediately. It disappeared the next day. I lost 4 yard signs and then wired number 5 to a big live oak in the front yard. That worked well. My truck, in my driveway, was egged and had beer poured over it. I washed the car and added another peace sticker. For a while it seemed hopeless. Until one day I was mowing the lawn and a neighbor walking her dog stopped to chat. She told how she wanted to oppose the war but felt very alone. She told me that my visual opposition to the war gave her the strength to attend several of the antiwar rallies in Austin and add a peace sticker to her car bumper. Then she burst into tears and thanked me for replacing the yard signs as soon as they were stolen.
And that's why you should wear your heart on your car bumper. Not for you, but to show others they are not alone.

(37,152 posts)The guys who ran me off the road worked as a team - the driver came about three inches from my car and his passenger held up a handwritten sign that read: "N***** Lover."
I drive from the DC area to Florida a lot - for me bumper stickers are not worth the risk.

(11,589 posts)Our truck has a ton of stickers. We almost gone run over on 1-75 (going back home to Atlanta) by a dude in a white Toyota. (ours is a maroon Tacoma) I was in the passenger seat. We were left of him. him gave me the finger and tried to pass us on the right, but not before pretending to side swipe us.
Hubby slowed down to let the asshole pass. He got in front of us, and I saw his bumper stickers, and to this day it makes me angry:
This was in 2007, BTW.

(21,020 posts)so many people go on about how much of their personal information is out there and they never stop to think about how what they display themselves can convey to those intent on doing harm/mischief.

I'd add to that, don't pick up your mail on your way out and then leave it in your car.

(9,275 posts)For your home land line (if you have one). Criminal can reverse-search the number and get your home address. You're especially SOL if your purse was stolen with your keys in it.

(21,020 posts)the other day when I got a PM from someone informing me that my sig photo which links back to my Photobucket account gave my real name.
I did not know that, and...since I've frequently posted about where (approximately) I live, I guess anyone could get my address. AND...here's the scary part...googling my address (or anyone's I imagine) will show the exact location of the house.
I realize I have a bit of a tendency to piss some people off, so it really did scare me to find out anyone could locate my house.
I've changed the settings in the meantime, and send out a second "thank you" to the person who gave me a heads up.

(29,414 posts)The safety tip was more about having your GPS set to your actual home address and then someone breaking into your car while it's not at home, finding that address, and knowing where to go while you're away from home.

(2,068 posts)Especially if you live in rural area. Burglars can look up your phone# and call to see if anyone answers. Paranoid? Maybe a little.
pipi_k
(21,020 posts)because we hardly ever go anywhere, and we get stupid telemarketer calls all the time so whenever a strange # appears on the caller ID we don't answer it.
So I'm imagining a burglar calling here, getting no answer, then showing up trying to break in.
Hah!!!
If he got past the motion sensing lights and cameras all over the yard, he would likely end up shitting himself when faced with Mr Pipi and his 12 gauge (please, nobody needs to start a pro or anti-gun subthread here, OK?).

(36,286 posts)despite the elaborate schemes seen in programs like Law and Order, most people who commit crimes rarely think ahead and tend to do stupid things. The very occasional home invasions involving strangers get the headlines, but most involve some sort of drug deal gone wrong and/or theft from a drug distributor. Your best protection is not to be acquainted with people involved in the trade.

With a yard sign 'enter at you own risk' they might decide not to venture in.
