If someone gave you enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life would you still be doing the same job?
Most people say "have to" and "no" when asked those questions. Do you want prosperity and plenty or a fantasy quest to collect money?

For me, once robots take over all of the jobs or I win the Lotto, I'm outta there.

(12,051 posts)I'm a real introvert and loner, and the need to work to pay the bills has thrown me into contact with whole bunches of people constantly, which is the definition of hell for an introvert. I am looking forward to retirement this year and can hardly wait.

(1,788 posts)I no longer work, but the jobs I've had over my lifetime have been physically demanding and not exactly fulfilling. Many people I know plan to retire early, for less monthly income from SS, just because their bodies will not last until 65+.

(6,183 posts)Let's say that tomorrow someone invents a robot that can do all the jobs that people don't want to do today. Would you continue to do what you are doing now?

(28,798 posts)if tomorrow i was suddenly independently wealthy, i would continue to do the job i am doing now long enough to train my replacement. then i would go do what i want to do, and yes it is work, but it is good work that does not necessarily include being chained to a desk for the same 9-10 hours daily.
and in between times, i would travel around the world living in hotels.

(11,916 posts)I'd give proper notice (but I wish it would be so fast their heads would spin). I'd prefer to work at volunteering for non-profits and being a mom who is available as needed for my son. My daughter is already in college and did well growing up, but I have a few years left with my son that I'd rather not miss out on. He seems to need more attention and guidance than my daughter did during middle school.

Of course, you have to play the lottery to win and my threshold for tolerance would be much lower.
Now of course, I would have to evaluate my position.

(50,273 posts)I'd work at establishing trusts to give the loot away forever and ever. The megawealthy puzzle me. For example, just because you can afford a handbag that costs thousands of dollars, why would you want one?

(53,410 posts)I would actually set up an office and go to work to give away money if I was that wealthy. It would be my 'job'. I've always wished my job description included 'philanthropist'.

(6,183 posts)In fact, the ultra wealthy are no more or no less happy than the rest of us. Money brings them nothing except a certain physical security, never having to worry about starving.
What if I gave you enough money so you could live the rest of your life, travel the world, go back to school and get a PHD, do volunteer work, whatever. What would you do exactly.

Lottery would make no difference in my life
as I buy what I need to exist and live a very simple life.

(18,998 posts)Let's say we have a system where all are needs are taken care of by robots...what would people do with there time?
The easy answer is that they would indulge themselves in pleasure seeking...but there are other possibilities...like education becoming popular again...and art and music and craftsmanship and literature..
So it could be heaven or it could be hell...and basically it is our choice what we make of things.

(89,250 posts)down on it. do other stuff like travel around the world. maybe invest in some small businesses around the country and take some more risks since loss wont affect your life.
(i have my own business so i would still keep this, but i think if i was working for someone else and hated the job i would quit and start my own business)

There's sooo much more to life than work, and spending it working only to acquire shit that you don't need is a really sad waste of your life.
