Not the old USSR, but they don't have to be for what they want to do.
I don't really blame them for being upset re what happened in Ukraine, but I thought Putin had a bit more of his wits about him, and knew military action would hurt more than help him. Not as smart as I thought, unfortunately. Now he's stuck with an economy that was already going to stagnate this year, but with a lot more capital flight taking place, which will cause the ruble to go lower and make an already bad inflation worse, on top of whatever effect sanctions have. Someone needed to spell out to the word s-t-a-g-f-l-a-t-i-o-n to him. Worst of all possible worlds. Would have been tough even before this mess, now it's just going to be almost intolerable.
