Triangle blaze killed 147 young workers, locked in by their employer (March 25, 1911)

http://www.workdayminnesota.org/index.php?history_9_03_25_2012

March 25, 1911 - A fire broke out on the upper floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist factory in New York City. Within minutes, the blaze killed 147 young workers, most of them Jewish and Italian immigrant women. The workers had been locked in by their employer. The tragedy inspired a movement for workplace safety and to crack down on sweatshops.

For more information on this tragedy and its aftermath, visit the Cornell University online exhibit, The Triangle Factory Fire, http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/Trianglefire/

Are the first 3 Triangle Shirtwaist pictures before the fire? The 4th one, of the little girl, is not actually related to Triangle Shirtwaist-- the girl was a cotton mill worker in North Carolina. All the ones after that seem to be pictures of the disaster and its aftermath.

I've seen documentaries on this, but they never showed the bodies. And that little girl standing there among the machines. That really got to me.

This is what they want - a 24/7 unregulated work mill death trap where out of control supervisors get away with treating their subordinates like crap, non-existent working conditions, unpaid overtime and the end of our pensions and benefits. If we're not careful - we will end up back at the factories that catch on fire. Remember - those that forget history are doomed to repeat it.

having to fight for safe working conditions and labor rights. Every time a shitty ad comes on my telly in LV going against the culinary workers union-the ad claims the union is keeping people from working-keeping poor people from coming to vegas to wed-union bosses are making lots of money while keeping you from working. These ads are going on right now! It's bad enough that we've seen unions greatly decrease in strength since reagan; but the owners want to decimate what's left.

The right to work orwellian law, basically, is the right to pay you a slave wage while ignoring any fekking labor right.

They tried to gloss it over in the papers, but my mother used to work there. She said they locked those doors because they were afraid the black people would steal the chickens. People died there because of their racism and negligence and NC not enforcing the damn laws there.

It is horrible the way workers are treated even now.

Will Recommend after I post this reply. K&R
