Malaysia plane search: China checks new 'debris' images

China has found debris in South China Sea, potentially from missing flight #MH370, Malaysian officials say

China is investigating new images of debris in the southern Indian Ocean, potentially from missing flight MH370, Malaysian officials say.

(updated)
China has satellite images of floating object, 72 feet by 98 feet, in the southern search area for Flight 370, Malaysian official says.

Ok updated again:

China is investigating new satellite images of debris in the southern Indian Ocean, potentially from missing flight MH370, Malaysian officials say.

Malaysia's acting transport minister read out the news as he was handed it during his daily briefing, saying one element of debris was 22.5m by 13m.

He said the Chinese government would give more details on Saturday.

Flight MH370 dropped out of contact an hour after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on 8 March carrying 239 people.

Malaysian officials suspect the plane was deliberately taken off course.

if it turns out to be the missing plane. I was listening to the news yesterday and they were talking about how it could be months before the wreckage was found if the plane had indeed crashed into the ocean.

China found an object in the southern Indian Ocean via satellite picture. Not the South China Sea.

And your headline implies they found actual debris.

So I think they made a mistake with the headline. It'd be good for the thread title to be updated here too, because that gave a very misleading impression.

I read the tweet where Malaysian Transport and Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein corrected the dimensions...he said they misheard the phone message from the Chinese Ambassador.

It was a tweet on his own twitter page.

but there is a huge difference between the South China Sea and the southern Indian Ocean.

South China Sea is where they had last contact with the plane. To leave it like they found images of debris there, creates all types of misinformation.

he never said a word about the South China Sea...he said "in the Southern Corridor". That's way down in the Indian Ocean.

I was watching his press conference when he was handed the slip of paper, he did initially give out the wrong measurements, but corrected them on his twitter page within about fifteen minutes, saying the object was 22.5 meters by 13 meters.

He's made a correction a few minutes ago to the measurements that he gave at the press conference, but he never did say anything about the China Sea.

According to Xinhua, the object was spotted on March 18, two days after the Australian sighting.

right for the search area, so I doubt that anyone is going to find any "debris" or whatever either of those satellites spotted, anyway.

I've read that it was about 75 miles southwest of the Australian satellite pics, but some other sites are saying that the location is more than 1700 miles from Perth, so who knows which is correct. They are saying that the drift would make sense for it to be further west.

I also read that when the Chinese search plane first arrived in Australia today, it landed at the wrong airport.

Maybe someone should call the whole thing off.

Really pretty without all that water. You can click here and select a magnified image from their site.

Australia is on the lower right, and the top of the plateau to the left is where they appear to be searching. 5000, maybe 8000 ft or more above that?
