When Friedman took senior status it left his seat vacant (Seat #3) and Obama appointed a new judge.
When a judge assumes senior status they go into semi-retirement and work part-time when they are needed.

I hope I explained it all okay.

16. About the African American lesbian nominee...

I found an article from January 17th, 2014 that mentions: Staci Michelle Yandle (Illinois)

President Obama’s latest nominees for the federal district court include Staci Michelle Yandle, who would become the first African American lesbian federal judge in two decades if confirmed, and two other groundbreaking nominees.

-snip-

Here: http://www.gavelgrab.org/?p=67900

But she hasn't been confirmed yet - her nomination is still pending in the Judiciary Committee waiting for a 'committee vote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_judges_appointed_by_Barack_Obama

IF it isn't Yandle that you were thinking of then maybe there's another one that I missed that could have been nominated and confirmed before her

Btw, regarding other openly gay federal judges...

When Obama took office there was only ONE openly gay 'federal' judge (that had been appointed by Bill Clinton).
Then in June 2013 there were SEVEN.
I can't find an article that has a list of the openly gay judges that have been confirmed from July 2013 to March 2014 - but I'm sure there are some.

June 13, 2013

On the day President Obama took office, there was only one openly gay judge with a lifetime appointment to the federal bench, Clinton appointee Deborah Batts, who took partial retirement last year. There are now seven. Earlier today, the Senate confirmed openly lesbian Judge Nitza I. Quiñones Alejandro to a federal district court in Pennsylvania. Judge Quiñones joins Judges Alison Nathan, Paul Oetken, Michael Fitzgerald, Michael McShane and Pamela Ki Mai Chen, all of whom are openly gay federal judges appointed by President Obama.
