Guinness, Heineken, and Sam Adams all made news by pulling their sponsorship of St. Patrick's Day parades in New York and Boston due to the organizers banning gay and lesbian groups. In response, Catholic League President Bill Donohue is calling on all Catholics to boycott the three companies. Donohue said in a press release that the event is a Catholic event, and "it is this Catholic element that angers those who are engaged in a bullying campaign against the St. Patricks Day parades. The bullies also have nothing but contempt for the constitutional rights of Irish Catholics." Oh, and while he will now no longer drink Guinness or Sam Adams, he declared, "Heineken was always slop, so there is no sacrifice there."

(45,319 posts)He never faces any form of censure from his Church, I assume he gets lots of praise from and access to Dolan and Francis and the rest of them. He gets lots of media attention, lavish offices from which he serves as the second head of that organization which has a large board of directors full of wealthy, famous people.
Some will tell you he's one guy with a fax machine, but they are speaking falsely because the truth shames them.

(4,788 posts)but unfortunately he isn't. I love how the RWNJs always invoke the 1st Amendment, and get it wrong. No, Mr. Donohue, the 1st Amendment rights of the parade organizers were not infringed on. They made their rules about who could or couldn't march in their parades and those rules were observed. Certain companies chose not to participate in the parades because of those rules. The government did not step in and stop the parades, nor did it tell the organizers they HAD to change their rules nor were any of the organizers arrested and jailed because of the rules they formulated. So, no 1st Amendment issues to see here. Just keep walking Mr. Donohue.
