That doesn't sound like racism alone - that sounds like corrupt cops trying to hide their involvement in a crime and using implied racism as a red herring AFTER the murder was exposed.
And all those burglaries?

Poor Trayvon may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time and George THOUGHT Trayvon saw things he didn't.
I hope the FBI is at least exploring this possibility.

I accept Solomon's objections to the tone of my original post and I added the "alone" qualifier. But I will stand by my gut feeling that racism alone doesn't fully explain the Sanford Police's actions. I sense desparation.

history and ethnicity. You see, I am a black woman and half my family comes from the deep South. My mother;s side comes from Oklahoma and Texas. I grew up being taught and warned by the elders in my family based on their experiences and then learning from my own. My GGrandfather was Irish, (the local bigots call him"the white N*gger) and his wife was black as a moonlesss night, a gorgeous woman with high cheekbones, epicanthal folds, -she literally looked like an asian woman carved from ebony and kinky hair to midcalf. My Greatpa Will was grundgingly respected and on warm civil terms with many of the local government-ie, the mayor, the sheriff etc.
In about 1910/1911, the local Night Riders, (KKK), decided that my GGrandparents had too much and they were going to put them in their place. My grandfather was wealthy by the standard of the day, whether that standard was black, white, blue or polyester and that would never do for the neighborhood idiots. He had a Rice Mill and hundreds of acres as well as thousands of head of Longhorns and god know how many other chickens, pigs, etc. My family caught wind of their impending visit and planned to wait for their "visit" with shotguns loaded with rock salt in the huge oaks leading up to the property. The Klowns showed up and my GGrandfather and his 6 sons started target practice on their rearends. They didn't want to kill them, if they could avoid it, because of the very good chacne that a lynching party would show up. They just wanted to left alone.
The KKK hadn't expected that reaction and hightailed it out of their as fast as their horses, mules, camels, tricycles and whatever else they were riding would carry them. The next morning, Greatpa went into town to talk to the sheriff and whomever else he could regarding the previous night's events. When they got into town, imagine my grandfather's anger and disgust when he saw alot of the white men that he "THOUGHT" he could trust limping and/or bandaged with slings, including the mayor, the Sheriff and his deputies, a couple of the pastors..In fact, he said that he didn't see ONE WHITE MAN IN THAT TINY TOWN that didn't have some evidence of being on his property that night before. the most galling thing is that he spoke with and shared a glass or two with some of these men on the regular.
No, We as people of color understand that sometimes, NOT ALWAYS and much less often nowadays, the people who protect those who have a lighter, more European complexion and although they take an oath to do the same for all members of the community, WE know and are raised to understand that many times, we are considered suspicious because we wear a skin that puts us at risk of committing crime.
In the early 80's, my family and I moved up to a suburb in Sacramento county and were in the process of moving into OUR newly completed home. While we were unloading boxes, a car turned onto the court and drove VERY slowly past. Made us a bit nervuos at first because we were from LA. Because it was a Court, it was EXTREMELY obvious when the car drove off the court went down the block and drove back. It turned out to be an older white woman and she was giving us the stink eye, while writing down the licence plate number. about an hour later, the local sheriff stopped by to ask what we were doing there..WTF??!! My parents explained that we were moving into OUR HOME.
Oh no, although there are countless instances of police corruption for crime's sake, there innumerable instances of being illegally black in America. It's not anecdotal, imaginary or conspiratorial...IT'S A FACT.
