Will Adele Make You Gay? Show Exposes 'Ex-Gay' Therapy

Don’t listen to Adele if you’re a gay man who wants to become straight. And don’t wear tight underwear either.

Those are among the bizarre claims uncovered by British physician and TV personality Christian Jessen as he explores the world of “ex-gay” therapists in a documentary special airing tonight on the U.K.’s Channel 4.

In the show, titled Cure Me, I’m Gay, most of the therapists Jessen visits are in the United States. John Smid, a retired doctor from Texas, tells him to throw out his Adele CD, reports London’s Daily Star. “Adele is very popular within the gay community,” Smid warns him. “You have to listen to Christian music.” Smid also cautions him that tight underwear will produce sexual arousal.

Smid, however, came out as gay in 2011 and renounced “ex-gay” therapy, which has been discredited by major mental health organizations and abandoned even by some religion-based practitioners. “Who knows what approach Smid is taking to this program — if he’s recommending his old nonsense for the fee that Channel 4 is paying him,” writes Andy Towle at Towleroad.
