(16,191 posts)You want pot to be environmentally friendly in California? Let Central Valley farmers plant the hell out of it on legal farms. That will slash the prices, undercut the illegal sellers, and put the illicit grows out of business. Nobody is going to run illegal grows on public lands if the stuff is selling for $10 an ounce and tens of thousands of acres of the stuff is growing on the Delta islands.

(111,292 posts)Take the pressure off power sources and grow the stuff outdoors. It requires little cultivation unless one is carefully harvesting it before it sets seeds. With no threat from the DEA paramilitary operations, it will "scar" much less sensitive land. It does need water, a concern in semi arid regions like California. Trip wires won't be necessary and wildlife will be far less inconvenienced.
Articles like this one cause blowback since most of the problems it's attributing to the "evil" pot plants are attributable to its illegality and the necessity of indoor cultivation vs. outdoor security measures.

(24,232 posts)Most of the damage to public lands is because of the prohibition.
If people or companies could just grow it on land they own without going to jail that would happen.
And several of their facts are false like the one about electricity of 4 plants grown indoors equaling 29 refrigerators.
Complete bullshit because all lights for growing are not the same.
You can grow 4 plants under a 150 watt light or a 1500 watt light.
So most of this article is un-contextualized reefer madness bullshit.
I expect more from Mother Jones quite frankly.
