Rising star among California Democrats takes stage at convention

(Reuters) - California Attorney General Kamala Harris sought to engage and energize fellow Democrats on Saturday and warned them not to become complacent with their domination of state politics.

A rising star widely expected to seek higher office, Harris, 49, urged Democrats to "stay awake" at her party's annual convention in Los Angeles, drawing a standing ovation as she urged attention to civil rights issues and consumer protection.

"There is a difference between having a dream and being asleep," said Harris, who was key in developing consumer protections for homeowners facing foreclosure in the wake of the mortgage meltdown.

"Let's not just be proud. Let's stay awake," she warned Democrats, whose party holds about two-thirds of seats in the state legislature as well as the posts of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and attorney general.

The old farts (I can say that 'cause I are one) need to move over and let the youngbloods take over. It's their turn for goddess' sake. It's time we step back, act as support and let the youngins lead. The Dem bench in California is certainly deep enough.

And Kamala Harris is 49????

who gets his orders from the CDP no matter how idiotic (he came out recently AGAINST cannabis). He's NEVER been a progressive, regardless of his reputation. Calling Brown a liberal is like calling Obama a liberal. Neither is true.

Yes, he AND THE VOTERS (remember, WE agreed to raise our own taxes via referendum) did do a good job after Ahnie but he also never said a word when Oakland police were beating OWS protesters, when the feds were raiding dispensaries and he's just hunky dory fine with fracking in a state that is experiencing a historic drought.

And never did I say anyone was "owed" anything. I said it's time for the old farts like us to step aside and let the youngins have a chance. We need new ideas, fresh minds, fresh perspectives and the energy that youth brings. The thing is, the Democrats have a GREAT bench in California, if only the old farts would just get the hell out of the way and let them in.

And I repeat, nobody is owed a turn.

I remember not too long ago when Ann Romney said something similar ("So I think it’s our turn now&quot and got blasted here for the comment.

No one is owed a turn, and if voters want the "old farts" to get out of the way, then they'll say so at the ballot box.

to Brown (or Feinstein for that matter), young or old. Challengers' campaigns are "discouraged" and that's being kind. Younger potential candidates are fully aware of that reality and have to stand aside to let the dinosaurs get their last glimmer in the spotlight.

As for Ann Romney, I've no idea what she says or doesn't say. I don't listen to idiots -- it wastes my time.

Finally, and for the second time, you're misrepresenting what I say in my posts. I never used the word "owed." I don't know how much clearer I can make it.

everywhere in the United States, not just in California. We all need to pay special attention to turning out a high percentage of Democrats in this mid-term election year. The Republicans are counting on Democratic complacency in districts where a Democratic incumbent is a sure winner. There are many other races in every election, and those are equally important.
