It's tomorrow, by the way. I have to admit that I rarely heard about it growing up. It is barely mentioned in the media, and I have yet to be greeted with "Happy International Womens' Day!" even once.
Yet it is a very popular day in the rest of the world, according to my international friends.
Oh, and Happy International Womens' Day, DU women!

(36,974 posts)International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women's Day, is marked on March 8 every year.[2] In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political, and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily in Europe, including Russia. In some regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. This is a day which some people celebrate by wearing purple ribbons.

(17,130 posts)I have heard of it, but very rarely. My Asian friend explained to me that in Asia it is a big, big deal. She misses it here.

I know Black History Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, probably because they do the best at making commercials and fundraising, and that's about it.

"Oh," she says in an Eastern European accent, "It's International Women's Day."
First I ever heard of it, about two hours ago. I live in a neighborhood with lots of eastern European immigrants.

My guess - is the press just doesn't cover it well and most people get their news from MSM.
