Particularly my eldest. He's 19, and a college baseball player. He's tall and slender, and walks with the casual, loose-limbed arrogance of a trained athlete. He spends most of his time hanging out with his teammates - white and black. He wears his jeans in that halfway-down-his-ass fashion that leads me to tell him that he looks like a butt crack salesman. He also favors hoodies, as do most of his teammates. His team has traveled to Florida for games on several occasions, and it terrifies me that some mouth-breathing, cop wannabe asshole might feel "threatened" by him one rainy night and decide to shoot first and ask questions later.

(14,337 posts)Yes, this is what they think. I speak my experience having a paranoid. Fox loving, NRA supporting, Republican husband. You can even seen this attitude right here on DU. People who are SO AFRAID somebody is going to kill them or take away their guns rights. I often wonder. How many of them have actually had to defend their lives? My guess is very few, but the boogey man is just around the next corner waiting to shoot them.

That applies to more than the police department.
