General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I get this death threat yesterday,
And from some fuckwit pretending to be Skinner, to add to the idiocy. (I emailed him all the particulars, of course, since this asshole was hiding behind his name.) Christ in a fucking teapot.
This person takes offense to my writings here and on my blog, and that is hardly a surprise. When one writes one's opinions and does so from a contrarian viewpoint and in a curmudgeonly tone, exception will frequently be taken. That is something I knew going into this undertaking, and is frequently a benefit: I learn a LOT from people who disagree with me.
But threats of violence and death from Right Wingnuts? Really? For saying "Putin sucks and so does war"? Such nonsense.
That is the background for today's post. As you'll see, I haven't exactly knuckled my forelock to this bullying dickweed. But we all need to know that lots of people read what we write here on DU, including trolls, lurkers, and unregistered readers.
When we think no one else is listening, and that we aren't having an impact, remember this post. There are more people reading here than we realize, and now and then we have an impact.
http://bluntandcranky.wordpress.com/2014/03/04/attention-all-violent-extremists-take-your-death-threats-and-shove-em-up-your-kazoos/
" Attention all violent extremists: take your death threats and shove em up your kazoos.
Assuming you can get them past your heads, that is.
Mr. Blunt and Cranky got another threat from a Right wingnut yesterday in response to this post. Here is the stupid-f*** blowhards idiotic, infantile screed, submitted using someone elses name and via a bogus AOL account:
One of the main reasons we should not go to war, not only now but anytime soon, is because Obama is an incompetent idiot. In facts, all liberals are incompetent idiots. If North Korea were to row over in canoes and invade the USA, and theres a Dem/liberal in office, we should just let them do what they want. Anything democrats and libs would want to do would only be another screw up.
Putin is more intelligent than Obama can ever hope to be. At least until 2017, were stuck with a prez in office thats as stupid as that riqster idiot at DU, and you cant get any more stupid than him. In fact, ** better watch his mouth in response to this or he might just wake up one day to find out hes dead. Got it, jackass? No, Im not fucking kidding .
Judging from the IP address, this is either Born-Again Bill in a different location, or a kissing cousin of his. And his pathetic diatribe is as good an example of why this blog is needed as any: violent extremism in all of its forms, no matter the reason or cause, is wrong. And my writing promulgates the antithesis of the reasoning behind violent, extreme, revolutionary people and their organizations.
Radical Centrism is, in large part, the renunciation of murderous means in service of ideologies; both those I agree with, and those with whom I do not agree. Said extremism being exemplified here. This cyber-bullying skidmark on the Tightie-Whities of American Politics, with his stupid and impotent threats and fantasies of murdering anyone who does not agree with him 24/7/365, is well deserving of being flipped off, with a Bronx cheer as accompaniment.
Bullies should never be allowed to succeed, and unlike the kind and gentle practices advocated these days, your humble correspondent is a firm believer in whooping right back on that bullys ass. This wussy-boy assassin wannabee who cowers behind other peoples identities whilst broadcasting ineffectual threats of bodily harm and death is just another bully. And an example of everything that is wrong with America in the modern age.
Instead of promising to kill a writer with whom he disagrees, the needledicked yutz could simply not f***ing read this blog. That is how free speech works: we have the right to speak, and we also have the right to not listen. There is no need to kill someone we dont agree with: just ignore them. Problem solved, without first-degree murder having been committed.
Of course, the relevant authorities have been alerted, as well as AOL and the individual this toerag was impersonating. Including IP and email addresses and all that jazz. Not that I believe he has the testiclar fortitude to actually carry out his jackass threats, but its always a good idea to have the cops on your side when whackos rear their butt-ugly heads.

It's as REM as you get w/o being REM.
Actually, not exactly ... since Peter Buck *is* playing on it ... which, in the first 10 seconds you'll go 'of course ... how could he NOT be?'
If you've never heard the album it's from called "The King is Dead", I highly recommend it to any REM fan. Buck plays on three songs, IIRC, and it's an absolutely start-to-finish brilliant disc.
The first line of the 2nd verse that goes
Heddy Green ... queen of supply-side bon-amie bone drab ... you know what I mean?

(2,419 posts)this is bucket list material! You have actually incited some screwball with access to the internet to break the law using only words and logic. This is one of the limitations on the 1st Amendment. Can't threaten bodily harm or violence with the intent to alarm someone. It doesn't matter if its on the internet, over the phone or in person. You've actually done a public service. Pest identification and hopefully removal.

(735 posts)I certainly see people single you out on here. And I see you stick up for yourself beautifully! I myself was constantly bullied in school, due to my Aspbergers, and didn't fight back. Only as an adult did I find the courage to stick up for myself as well as others. So I admire people such as yourself and riqster for not letting them get away with it. I have a theory that a large part of it is jealousy, people who feel inadequate and are therefore threatened by confidence and intelligence. Especially if it is coming from a woman.

(154,021 posts)Some people take fictional worlds more seriously than the real world. I mean, to the point of investing their personas in them.
If you are the author of a fictional world, like I am doing right at the moment, it makes some sense to take it personally and try to think like your characters, and see things from their point of view and world experience. If you are a fan, and you treat it almost...as a religion...
It was entertaining to discuss the machievelian twists and turns, once the virus flew we knew we were not dealing with somebody who was ok.
For the record, the lesson I took from that is that politics cannot, should not, become like religion. When I see people treating it the same way as those gamers, it is quite frankly scary.

(5,214 posts)"In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics.
Thats bad, but its nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. The research, conducted by Erin Buckels of the University of Manitoba and two colleagues, sought to directly investigate whether people who engage in trolling are characterized by personality traits that fall in the so-called Dark Tetrad: Machiavellianism (willingness to manipulate and deceive others), narcissism (egotism and self-obsession), psychopathy (the lack of remorse and empathy), and sadism (pleasure in the suffering of others).
It is hard to overplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. Whats more, it also found a relationship between all Dark Tetrad traits (except for narcissism) and the overall time that an individual spent, per day, commenting on the Internet.
In the study, trolls were identified in a variety of ways. One was by simply asking survey participants what they enjoyed doing most when on online comment sites, offering five options: debating issues that are important to you, chatting with others, making new friends, trolling others, and other. Heres how different responses about these Internet commenting preferences matched up with responses to questions designed to identify Dark Tetrad traits:
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/climate_desk/2014/02/internet_troll_personality_study_machiavellianism_narcissism_psychopathy.html
The paper adds that they only found 5.6% of those questioned admitted to trolling.
There's a graph showing the breakdown of the different types of Internet users and then the breakdown within these of the 'Dark Tetrads' (I'm going to have to remember that term; it rocks).
Sadists are the most prevalent of the Dark Tetrads and in their comments in the write-up wrote the following;
Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!
