I wonder.. (Re the wave of "religious freedumb" bills)

I may be giving the GOP more credit than it deserves, but I could see all these legislatures passing these kinds of laws, fully knowing that they'd be vetoed or overturned.

Why? To try to fire up their aging, bigoted base. They het up the god botherers and bigots who make sure to show up at the polls.

What percentage of eligible voters actually vote in a non-presidential election year? Just over 35%, if I recall correctly.

Remember the crap that filled state ballots in 2010? Same strategy. Even though popular opinion didn't line up with the initiatives, they tried to make sure their base voted.

1. As sad as it is for me to say, I think Arizona will mark a turning point in this nonsense.

Ohio already withdrew their version of the same after Brewer's veto. There is no turning back and I think it's starting to be clear to the morons in state legislatures.

Bigots in the south were still running on segregationist platforms long after Brown.

Like I said, I may be giving them more credit than they deserve, but nobody ever lost a bet underestimating how ugly the GOP could get.

3. I think you have a point; that's what they were going for, at any rate.

It may be that they've misjudged their constituency...they just don't yet appreciate they're more interested in jobs and making ends meet than bullshit, maybe.

At long last...?
