It’s church night, Truthseekers! Mike has a lovely little story about psychotropic plants, miracles, and the Bible. Might explain a lot of the mythology and imagery that has confounded scholars over the centuries.
And we are also all over the fight for justice and equality in Arizona over the issue of legalized bigotry against homosexuals. As we all know, the narrow-minded legislators who purport to represent their constituents have passed a bill that would allow public businesses to refuse their services to suspected gays if they cite religious reasons for their focused discrimination.
It’s now up to the boney Governor Jan Brewer to determine the fate of the bill. Will she favor the lovers,or the haters? For reasons we can’t understand, she’s going to take her own sweet time before making her decision. The Washington Post explains it this way:
Arizona lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that allows businesses in the state to deny service to LGBT customers on religious grounds. The bill has not been signed by Gov. Jan Brewer (R), who told reporters at the National Governors Association this week that she was in no rush to decide the bill’s fate.
If the bill becomes law, Arizona would likely face another punishing round of boycotts, similar to or worse than those that state leaders invited in 2010 by approving a harsh immigration bill. Several major firms have urged Ms. Brewer to veto the measure. Three state legislators who once supported it have switched sides; opponents, they charge, are twisting the meaning of the bill, but they argue that the policy is no longer worth all the controversy.
Just an aside - what criteria is the religiously-offended establishment going to use to determine whether or not they suspect a particular customer is a homosexual? It’s not as if they walk around waving rainbow flags. Is the discrimination so targeted that only “openly gay” patrons are to be refused service? What about “straight-acting” gays? Will they be forced to wear scarlet letters or gold stars? Register their sexual preferences with the state? It would be interesting to see how Anthony and the Supremes would weigh in on this one. If Jan signs this atrocity into law, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before the lawyers are petitioning for cert.
