I'm no longer going to be spending my vacation $$ in crazily-run red states like North Carolina. Good-by OBX until you turn blue.

(29,414 posts)Because I don't see any on this map:

If you're using the electoral map to determine what's a "red" state and what's a "blue" state, then your using a rather large broad brush, and limiting your experiences considerably.

Besides, the best way to fight republicans isn't to "run away"

(16,113 posts)In West Virginal in 2012, for example, Romney handily won the state... it also has a Democratic governor and overwhelmingly Democratic legislature.
Would it be Red, Blue, or Purple?

(16,113 posts)red state. Some people just look at the last presidential election, others look at the governor or legislature, other's look at the laws of the state. Sure, there are certain states that everyone can universally agree are Red and others that everyone can universally agree are blue, but there's a lot more "purple" than you'd see on the election map.

(12,189 posts)Maryland is not a hate-state, either. I am sure you might encounter bigots anywhere, but it's much more likely in places that have hate laws. Being from Ohio, I am well aware of this.

(11,441 posts)in the DC suburbs, and vacationed at MD and DE beaches. There are bigots everywhere. Not as open as I've seen in NC, though. One of my favs was a good ol' boy in a "Shoot a Yankee for Jesus" t-shirt -- I can only imagine his views on equality.
I'm not gay, but understand what you and others are saying. I guess I take a different approach, like seeking out gay-owned businesses, or those generally promoted on a site like this: gayashevilleonline
There's only one truly "red" state that I never care to set foot in, but will in an effort to hit all 50 states before I croak. "Blue" voters in NC are trying to do the right thing, especially with awareness-raising Moral Mondays throughout the state.
Screw it, I'm taking my tourism dollars to the pot states. And if ever there were a state ripe for pot, it's North Carolina. But we're losing out again... what a waste!

(6,772 posts)A bit dated:
9. North Carolina: Leading the way in this year's legislative session in North Carolina were bills designed to kill community broadband, extend the anti-immigrant E-Verify program to all employers and require immigration status checks of public school students.
In this year's budget, North Carolina saw its largest decline in spending in 30 years. The budget, enacted over a gubernatorial veto, will lead to the firing of teachers, the elimination of drug courts and a weakening of environmental regulations. The governor also vetoed a restrictive voter identification bill. Other key provisions passed by the legislature include relaxing regulation on interest rates, destroying the public campaign financing system, requiring women seeking abortions to first listen to right-wing propaganda and cutting funding for Planned Parenthood.
